Diagnóstico y tratamientos avanzados

Our Program provides access to the most advanced diagnostic technologies available to evaluate and monitor the full spectrum of eye conditions. We offer detailed eye examinations that include refraction, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, dilated fundus evaluation and high-resolution imaging. Specialized testing, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the retina and optic nerve, visual field testing (perimetry), corneal topography and tomography, pachymetry and fundus photography, allows for early detection and precise monitoring of conditions ranging from glaucoma and diabetic eye disease to corneal disorders and macular degeneration. When needed, three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound and other advanced imaging techniques are also used to assess intraocular and orbital pathology.

In addition to diagnostics, we provide a full range of state-of-the-art treatments tailored to each patient’s specific needs, from prescription glasses and medical therapies to laser and surgical procedures. Office-based interventions, such as yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser capsulotomy for secondary cataracts, selective laser trabeculoplasty for glaucoma and certain eyelid and lacrimal procedures, can be performed in a convenient outpatient setting. For more complex conditions, our surgeons perform cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation, pterygium excision and eyelid and lacrimal surgeries, coordinating closely with subspecialists in retina, cornea, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology and oculoplastics when advanced care is required. Our comprehensive approach is designed to help ensure accurate diagnosis, effective treatment and seamless integration of care across the full range of common and complex eye conditions.

We offer a comprehensive suite of advanced diagnostics and treatments, including:

Ophthalmology Research

We are leading collaborative research and spearheading numerous studies and clinical trials, including several funded by the National Eye Institute/National Institutes of Health (NEI/NIH), translating novel scientific discoveries into new diagnostics and treatments to improve patient outcomes. Our research spans basic, translational and clinical science, with a focus on advancing the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of eye diseases. Core areas of investigation encompass every subspecialty of ophthalmology, including ocular surface disorders, corneal and retinal disease, glaucoma, cataract and refractive surgery, eye inflammation and neuro-ophthalmology, as well as the development of new imaging and surgical technologies. By integrating research and patient care, our physician-scientists are helping to shape the future of comprehensive eye care while improving vision and quality of life for patients today.

Our research is not only advancing clinical practice, but also helping to inform national guidelines and models of care. Through leadership on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Patterns Committee, our ophthalmologists play a central role in defining the standards that guide comprehensive adult eye care across the country.

Trusted Global Leaders in Evidence-Based Eye Care

We are one of 13 centers worldwide designated as a Cochrane Eyes and Vision (CEV) Center for Evidence-Based Vision Care, an NEI/NIH-funded distinction recognizing our commitment to advancing evidence-based medicine and eye care. Our contributions to research and identifying the most effective treatments in patient care serve as a model for clinical sites around the world.

Programas e iniciativas comunitarias transformadoras

Our Program is recognized for its collaborative approach and comprehensive clinical care extending beyond the walls of Montefiore Einstein into the community through targeted outreach initiatives designed to preserve vision, slow disease progression, prevent both vision loss and blindness and enhance quality of life, particularly among vulnerable populations. Key efforts include community education, telemedicine-based strategies for the early detection and management of diabetic retinopathy and other vision-threatening conditions and our partnership with Lighthouse Guild International’s Technology Peers for Accessible Living (Tech Pals) Program, which bridges generations through personalized technology mentorship for individuals with vision loss. This unique initiative pairs blind or visually impaired young adults with older adults to foster digital literacy and independence. Montefiore Ophthalmologists have also designed a way to use our electronic medical record systems to map clusters of disease throughout the Bronx, potentially allowing for community-based targeted interventions. Through these and other initiatives, we continue to expand access to care, preserve continuity and reduce disparities, advancing eye health across the communities we serve.

About Eye Conditions

Eye conditions encompass a broad spectrum of disorders involving the eyes, eyelids and visual system. These range from common problems such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis, dry eye, refractive errors and the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses, to more complex and vision-threatening diseases, including corneal disease, keratoconus (a progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea), glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and ocular trauma. Some conditions arise naturally with aging, while others are associated with systemic disease or environmental factors. Because many disorders progress silently before symptoms appear, comprehensive eye examinations are essential for early detection, timely intervention and the preservation of visual function.
