Through our first in the region, nationally recognized American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP)-accredited residency program, dynamic student rotations, and interdisciplinary Grand Rounds, we are shaping the future of pharmacy and cultivating the next generation of leaders. By combining rigorous clinical training with hands-on mentorship and research opportunities, our programs prepare pharmacists to excel as integral members of patient care teams—advancing both individual careers and the profession as a whole.
Nationally Recognized Pharmacy Residency Program
Our postgraduate year one (PGY-1) and postgraduate year two (PGY-2) residency programs prepare pharmacists for advanced practice in a wide range of settings. Residents gain direct patient care experience, participate in research, and work alongside expert preceptors across the Montefiore Einstein Health System. What makes our program exceptional:
- First in the region: Our PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency was established in 1968 as New York City’s first pharmacy residency program.
- IDSA recognition: Our PGY-2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency program operates within an IDSA-designated Center of Excellence for Antimicrobial Stewardship.
- Comprehensive training: Residents annually gain experience across 20 specialized clinical areas.

PGY-1 Program
Accredited since 1975, our PGY-1 residency provides broad training across inpatient and ambulatory settings, preparing residents for board certification and advanced practice.
PGY-2 Program
Specialty training in areas such as Infectious Diseases, with direct participation in Montefiore’s nationally recognized Antimicrobial Stewardship Program—designated as a Center of Excellence by the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Premier Student Training in Pharmacy Practice
Montefiore Einstein is a premier training site for Early and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (EPPE and APPE) students from leading schools such as SUNY Buffalo, Touro College, and Binghamton University.
Through structured rotations in clinical and operational settings, students:
- Gain hands-on experience in safe medication preparation and distribution
- Participate in clinical rounds and apply pharmacotherapy to real cases
- Build confidence in communication and decision-making under expert mentorship
