Montefiore Einstein Pharmacy Student Training
Montefiore Einstein serves as a precepting site for early pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) and advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) students from pharmacy schools such as SUNY Buffalo, Touro College, Binghamton University and others. These structured rotations offer hands-on learning experiences in both clinical and operational pharmacy settings.
Early Pharmacy Practice Experience Students
IPPE students, in the early years of pharmacy school, gain foundational hospital pharmacy experience by:
- Assisting with basic pharmacy operations
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams
- Exploring patient safety, medication reconciliation and regulatory compliance
- Observing medication distribution, compounding and sterile preparations
Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Students
APPE students, in their final year of pharmacy school, take on more independent clinical responsibilities, including:
- Applying pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to optimize therapy
- Documenting interventions and consults in electronic health records
- Enhancing professional skills through presentations and case discussions
- Gaining experience in stewardship, formulary management and policy development
- Managing medication therapy and assessing drug efficacy
- Participating in rounds and making medication recommendations
Hospital pharmacy preceptors provide guidance, mentorship and real-world learning experiences tailored to each student’s level of training. Through these experiences, students develop essential skills in critical thinking, clinical decision-making and communication, preparing them for future pharmacy practice.
