For more than six decades, Montefiore Einstein’s Pharmacy Department has been at the forefront of redefining pharmacy practice. From pioneering one of the nation’s first residency programs to advancing automation, clinical excellence, and groundbreaking research, our milestones reflect an unwavering commitment to innovation, patient safety, and transformative care.
Key Milestones
- 1960s: Launched one of the first pharmacy residency programs in the nation, setting the stage for generations of clinical pharmacy leaders.
- 1970s–1980s: Reimagined pharmacy care with satellite pharmacies and decentralized clinical pharmacy specialists in infectious disease, cardiology, pediatrics, and oncology—bringing expertise closer to patients.
- 1990s: Pioneered the use of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and automated medication dispensing systems, revolutionizing decentralized medication management.
- 2000s–2010s: Enhanced safety and precision with advanced technologies for selecting, compounding, inspecting, and reporting IV and oral doses. Expanded the reach of clinical pharmacy specialists across 10 medical specialties.
- 2013: Forged Collaborative Drug Therapy Management Agreements with physicians, empowering pharmacists to co-manage complex diseases such as heart failure, anticoagulation, diabetes, and hypertension.
- 2020: Launched the Pharmacotherapy Grand Rounds lecture series to share expertise and drive innovation in medication therapy.
- 2021: Established the Division of Pharmacotherapy and the Center for Pharmacotherapy Research and Quality—dedicated to advancing evidence-based care and measuring pharmacotherapy effectiveness in hospitalized patients. Also created the Montefiore Health System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee to oversee formulary management across the health system.
- 2024: Opened the Montefiore Specialty Pharmacy in Yonkers, NY, providing access to a state-of-the-art facility with advanced automation and an expert team of clinical pharmacists dedicated to supporting patients with complex, chronic and rare conditions.
