• Broad Clinical Exposure: Participate in the daily activities of our busy ophthalmology clinics across a wide range of subspecialties including cornea/external disease, uveitis, retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, pediatric ophthalmology, and neuro-ophthalmology
  • Learn to master the external and slit lamp examinations along with indirect ophthalmoscopy
  • Formulate an understanding of diagnostic testing using state of the art equipment and the ocular manifestations of systemic and central nervous system disorders
• Advanced Learning: Attend resident didactic conferences and train in our surgical simulation laboratories.
  • Full access to the Ronald M. Burde Microsurgical Simulation Laboratory and access the Eyelecture.com portal
• Surgical Observation: Observe a diverse array of major and minor surgical procedures in both ambulatory and operating room environments.
  • Minor clinic procedures such as lid biopsies, chalazion excision, and laser procedures such as peripheral iridotomy, laser capsulotomy, and retinal photocoagulation
  • Major surgical procedures such as cataract extraction, pars plana vitrectomy, corneal transplantation, and adnexal/orbital procedures at our ambulatory surgery facilities throughout the Bronx
• Active Participation: Work alongside residents and faculty, with opportunities to present patient cases and deliver a formal case presentation to conclude the rotation.

Montefiore Medical Center & the Albert Einstein College of Medicine use the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) through the Association for American Medical Schools (AAMC) website for all fourth-year medical students seeking to participate in clinical away electives in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. This program is specifically for fourth-year medical students applying for elective courses at other medical schools. Approval, scheduling, and notifications are managed through the VSLO website.

Elective requests should be submitted as early as possible given limited availability. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through the VSLO portal.
