Medical Student Observership
The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences provides a dynamic clerkship designed for a comprehensive immersion into clinical and surgical ophthalmology at the Montefiore-Einstein campus.
Program Highlights
- Broad Clinical Exposure: Participate in the daily activities of our busy ophthalmology clinics across a wide range of subspecialties including cornea/external disease, uveitis, retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, pediatric ophthalmology, and neuro-ophthalmology
- Learn to master the external and slit lamp examinations along with indirect ophthalmoscopy
- Formulate an understanding of diagnostic testing using state of the art equipment and the ocular manifestations of systemic and central nervous system disorders
- Advanced Learning: Attend resident didactic conferences and train in our surgical simulation laboratories.
- Full access to the Ronald M. Burde Microsurgical Simulation Laboratory and access the Eyelecture.com portal
- Surgical Observation: Observe a diverse array of major and minor surgical procedures in both ambulatory and operating room environments.
- Minor clinic procedures such as lid biopsies, chalazion excision, and laser procedures such as peripheral iridotomy, laser capsulotomy, and retinal photocoagulation
- Major surgical procedures such as cataract extraction, pars plana vitrectomy, corneal transplantation, and adnexal/orbital procedures at our ambulatory surgery facilities throughout the Bronx
- Active Participation: Work alongside residents and faculty, with opportunities to present patient cases and deliver a formal case presentation to conclude the rotation.

Application Process:
Montefiore Medical Center & the Albert Einstein College of Medicine use the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) through the Association for American Medical Schools (AAMC) website for all fourth-year medical students seeking to participate in clinical away electives in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. This program is specifically for fourth-year medical students applying for elective courses at other medical schools. Approval, scheduling, and notifications are managed through the VSLO website.
Application Deadlines:
Elective requests should be submitted as early as possible given limited availability. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis through the VSLO portal.
