The Montefiore Einstein Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is home to one of the most comprehensive departments in the nation and one of the largest in New York State, with over a century of experience and groundbreaking research. Montefiore Einstein uses diagnostics and leading-edge treatments to deliver comprehensive, personalized eye care for adults and children, including those with complex and rare vision conditions. From routine vision care to highly specialized medical laser and surgical interventions, we provide seamless, multidisciplinary care tailored to the unique needs of each patient.
Our specialists perform thousands of intraocular procedures annually and have expertise spanning every subspecialty within ophthalmology, including cornea and external disease; refractive eye surgery; cataract; glaucoma; neuro-ophthalmology; oculoplastics and reconstructive surgery; pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus and ophthalmic pathology; vitreoretinal disease and uveitis. Our cornea specialists perform the full spectrum of transplantation procedures, from Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) to keratoprosthesis, and are advancing regenerative therapies. We also offer the latest advancements in corneal cross-linking for keratoconus and address complex ocular surface diseases with amniotic membrane therapy. In oculoplastics, we offer advanced reconstructive and cosmetic procedures, biostimulatory and dermal fillers, and neuromodulators such as Botox® to rejuvenate the periocular area.

Our diagnostic offerings include ultra-widefield imaging, swept-source and enhanced-depth optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography, corneal tomography, ocular biometry. Our specialists are pioneers in minimally invasive eye surgery, co-inventing the first FDA-cleared device for minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and continuing to lead in the use of the latest minimally invasive techniques for faster recovery. For cataract and lens-based surgery, we offer the most advanced intraocular lens options and presbyopia-correcting technologies.
At our state-of-the-art Lasik and Eye Care Center, we provide concierge-level refractive care using the most advanced laser vision correction technologies, including topography-guided laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). We are among the few academic centers nationwide equipped with the latest femtosecond and excimer laser platforms, such as the WaveLight® FS200 and Allegretto Wave® systems, allowing for fully customized treatments that enhance both safety and visual outcomes.
We are also amongst the first in the nation to contribute to large databases such as SOURCE (Sight Outcomes Research Collaborative) and Epic Cosmos to allow our researchers to access data from millions of patients to improve health care outcomes.

We are expanding access to care through advanced telemedicine (teleretinal) screening programs, and we remain dedicated to raising the standard of ophthalmology care for both adults and children. Our research spans basic, translational and clinical science, advancing the understanding and management of eye conditions across every subspecialty- from corneal diseases and transplantation, refractive surgery, cataract and lens disorders and congenital and adult glaucoma, to retinal and macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, inherited retinal conditions, ocular oncology, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, ocular inflammation and uveitis and oculoplastic and orbital surgery.
We are developing new medical and surgical therapies and leveraging big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to transform diagnostics and clinical care. Our physicians are leading innovations in biologics and regenerative medicine while advancing gene therapy, stem cell transplantation and precision medicine. Also, through our clinical trials, our patients can access emerging technologies and innovative treatments that may be unavailable to the general public.
