Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center has more than 50 years of experience providing a comprehensive spectrum of traditional and holistic care to patients and those close to them. The dedicated oncology social workers in our Department of Social Services are trained to assist you and your family with any needs that arise, from the time of your diagnosis through treatment and into survivorship.
How a Social Worker Can Help
Following a cancer diagnosis, our care team will recommend a social worker for one-on-one emotional support. Whether you’re in the hospital or an outpatient facility, one of our compassionate social workers can help address any of your concerns including issues regarding finances and caregiving resources. The social worker will also connect you and your family with organizations and local community resources that serve cancer patients. Our goal is to help you and your loved ones to minimize stress so you can focus on healing.
Social workers provide the following:
Counseling Services
Our Cancer Center social workers are certified counselors who can identify resources to meet a variety of needs. Social workers can perform a complete psychosocial assessment, and use the results of this assessment to refer you and your family to additional helpful services. The social worker can also provide health education, so you have all the information you need to understand your cancer treatment and options.
Discharge Planning
From the time of admission to the hospital, a social worker will work with your doctor and the rest of your care team to ensure you’re fully supported and have the appropriate care when the time comes for you to be discharged. Early during your hospital stay, the social worker will meet with you and your family or caregiver to begin planning for your return home.
