Financial Counseling
Diagnosis and treatment for cancer can be physically as well as financially stressful. The financial counselors at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center are here to help you from the start and throughout your care, helping you and your family with any finance or payment questions you may have—so you can focus on healing.
Financial Counseling Services
All patients—no matter their income level—can meet with a financial counselor.
A financial counselor will contact you before your first visit if you don’t have insurance information on file, or if your insurance has expired.
Your financial counselor can help you with:
- Common financial questions
- What to expect for out-of-pocket expenses (costs to you)
- Completing forms and applications for co-pay support
- Contacting your insurance carrier to determine coverage and potential out-of-pocket expenses (costs to you)
- Understanding your insurance policy details or benefits statements
- Setting up a payment schedule
The financial counselor is there to help. You don’t need a referral to meet with one.
Financial Assistance for Cancer Care
Your financial counselor can also help you with financial assistance questions and ideas, including:
- Identifying patient assistance programs (through the American Cancer Society, government programs, etc.) that offer financial aid, assistance, grants and resources to people with cancer and their families, such as potential help with transportation costs
- Helping complete forms and applications for free or reduced-cost medications. . In coordination with pharmaceutical companies, the financial counselor can sometimes help get the cost of medication covered beyond a basic co-pay.
- Providing information about how to contact your local Medicaid office if you don’t have insurance
At any point during your care, you can ask your healthcare provider—or call your clinic—to connect with a financial counselor for help with treatment coverage, medical expenses or other questions or concerns. You can also ask about meeting with a social worker for help in handling the stress, logistics and other challenges of navigating a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
