Liver Cancer Screening

If you are at high risk for liver cancer, you can find advanced screening services at the NCI-designated Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center. We work within our clinical settings and with partners in the community to encourage and offer screenings for those at highest risk, so they can take a proactive role in their health and feel empowered and informed.

Liver Cancer Screening Program

In its earliest and most curable stages, liver cancer has no symptoms. Understanding your risk for liver cancer and finding it as early as possible is key to better treatment outcomes. We strive to increase liver cancer awareness and screening to save lives. We’re also focused on encouraging screening for hepatitis B and hepatitis C—the leading causes of liver cancer.

Through our Starfish Program, a partnership with Hep Free NYC’s Check Hep B Patient Navigation Program, we work closely with religious groups, leaders and other community members to educate at-risk people about hepatitis B and liver cancer, and connect them to screenings.

About Liver Cancer Prevention & Screening

Your liver filters waste from your blood and helps your body with digestion. Certain diseases can damage your liver and can lead to liver cancer. There are actions you can take to keep your liver healthy and prevent liver cancer. These include:

  • Getting vaccinated against hepatitis B infection
  • Seeking treatment for chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection
  • Reducing foods such as corn, peanuts and tree nuts in your diet that can be contaminated with the chemical aflatoxin B1
  • Limiting or not drinking alcohol
  • Not smoking
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Managing chronic conditions such as diabetes
  • Not injecting recreational drugs or sharing needles

You should consider screening for liver cancer if you:

  • Are living with hepatitis B or hepatitis C
  • Have scarring (cirrhosis) of the liver
  • Have too much iron (hemochromatosis)

High Risk for Liver Cancer

Certain demographic groups are at higher risk for hepatitis B or a hepatitis C infection, which puts them at higher risk for liver cancer.

If your doctor determines that you are at high risk, they will closely monitor your health. Your doctor may recommend a liver screening every six or 12 months to check for signs of cancer.
