Gynecologic Oncology
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology provides state-of- the- art comprehensive care for women with preinvasive and invasive gynecologic malignancies including those of the cervix, uterus, vulva, tubes ovaries and peritoneum. Our practice offers outpatient care/consultations, minimally invasive and radical surgery as well as chemotherapeutic management for women with gynecologic disease. We offer an array of therapeutic modalities and all the faculty members are expert in these office procedures including colposcopy, laser surgery, loop excision (LEEP) and hysteroscopy.
The Division participates in many cooperative group trials through the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), the New York GOG, as well as having access to many Phase I drugs released from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). We offer many investigator initiated protocols within the Albert Einstein Cancer Center, as well as through the Pharmaceutical industry and enroll patients in therapeutic protocols in conjunction with other cancer centers across the country.
Our patients receive personalized nursing support throughout and following their treatment. Twenty four-hour physician coverage is provided by the divisional faculty and address potential problems and other issues with may arise. Apart from patients with cancer, we also actively manage patients with preinvasive disease of the cervix, vulva and endometrium. We offer an array of therapeutic modalities and all faculty members are expert in these office procedures including colposcopy, laser surgery, loop excision (LEEP) and hysteroscopy.
In addition to the clinical interests and responsibilities, our faculty is all involved academically with investigations focused on innovative strategies t o improve cancer diagnosis, management and outcomes. The division's research initiatives are well represented at national and international cancer conferences and meetings throughout the year, many of which result in publications in peer-review journals.
The faculty are Board Certified or Eligible in Gynecologic Oncology. The Division has Gynecologic Oncology fellowship-training program, one of only 30 in the United States, and attracts and recruits outstanding fellows and junior faculty.
The Director of the division is Gary L Goldberg , MD, a nationally and internationally known gynecologic oncologist. He is also Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health.
He has expertise and special interest in the management of patients with ovarian, endometrial, uterine, vulvar and cervical cancer and is referred patients for complex and radical cancer, reconstructive and other surgery. He also performs minimally invasive surgery if this is clinically indicated.
There are 4 other gynecologic oncologists in the division and they all have expertise in the management of patients with cancers of the female reproductive tract.
Dr Abbie Fields serves as Director of the Familial Cancer Screening Program targeted toward identification/early diagnosis/chemoprevention/surgical prophylaxis(minimally invasive technique) of patients at risk of developing breast/ovarian cancer due to genetic predisposition. She also specializes in novel chemotherapeutics for advanced disease as well as being a nationally recognized specialist in radical resections/reconstruction for gynecologic malignancies.
Dr Guiseppe Del Priore has expertise in fertility sparing in patients with gynecologic cancer and is a surgeon who employs minimally invasive techniques. He has published numerous articles and a textbook on innovative treatment options for cancer patients. His primary interest is in fertility issues and options for cancer patients.
Dr Mark Einstein interests are in clinical and translational research. Clinically, he sees patients with neoplasms of the cervix, vulva, and vagina as well as endometrial and ovarian cancer. Dr. Einstein is a NIH clinical investigator with funding focused in the pathways to the malignant transformation of cervical cancer. In addition to his clinical and lab work, he is an investigator on many clinical protocols including a preinvasive cervical cancer vaccine trial. He is also an outstanding minimally invasive surgeon.
Dr Dineo Khabele is actively involved in clinical and laboratory research in the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer. Dr. Khabele has a particular interest in utilizing high throughput techniques such as cDNA microarrays and tissue microarrays to study complex mechanisms implicated in the development of ovarian cancer. She is also interested in studying the molecular mechanisms of cell death and chemotherapy resistance in ovarian cancer. She is responsible for the care of all patients with gynecologic cancers at the Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx hospital
Outpatient visits and consultation are provided at the Montefiore Medical Park ( Institute for Women's Health, Genetics and Human Reproduction - Dr's Goldberg, Fields and Einstein), the Montefiore Medical Center, Moses campus (Centennial Women's Center – Dr's Del Priore and Khabele), in Manhattan (Dr Del Priore) and in Larchmont at the Larchmont Women's Center (Dr. Fields).
