History of Montefiore Einstein Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery

The Department of OtorhinolaryngologyHead and Neck Surgery (ORLH&NS) was established on July 1, 1970, at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. This development followed an agreement on January 1, 1969, that united Montefiore Medical Center (MMC) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) into a comprehensive healthcare institution. It wasn’t until 1981 that the first two departments at AECOM—ORLH&NS and Ophthalmology—were unified across both institutions. The Department has expanded to include nine divisions offering a wide range of services. The history of our Department has been guided by its mission statement, which continues to drive its commitment to patient care.

Our Mission

Since its official establishment in 1970, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery has pursued a threefold mission: to provide the highest quality clinical care using advanced technology to enhance the patient experience, to advance care through research, and to deliver innovative education that prepares the next generation of doctors.

Advancing Minimally Invasive Techniques

We continue to conduct an extensive range of clinical research, participating in prospective clinical trials and pioneering new minimally invasive surgical techniques that minimize facial incisions and complications for our patients.

Specialists in Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery

Montefiore Einstein specializes in treating children with significant airway problems. These patients include children with multiple medical or disability conditions that can cause complications. Our work with deaf children from bilingual families has spawned research to learn how the brain reacts when a child regains hearing and encounters both English and Spanish simultaneously.

With depth of knowledge and expertise in all areas of otorhinolaryngology, we continue to deliver expert care to our patients, working with our outside partners to bring the highest level of care to the Hudson Valley and beyond.
