Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Musculoskeletal ultrasound (also called sonography) is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed pictures of soft tissue abnormalities around tendons, joints and muscles without radiation exposure.
Our physiatrists use diagnostic ultrasound in conjunction with pain management therapies to relieve discomfort caused by musculoskeletal injuries and treat conditions such as:
- Arthritis
- Bursitis
- Frozen shoulder
- Carpel tunnel syndrome
- Tennis Elbow or Golfer’s Elbow
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- Gout
- Tendon tears and ruptures
- Ligament tears
- Tears and other abnormalities in the muscles
- Compressed nerves
- Plantar fasciitis
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Tendinopathy
- Neuromas
As our physicians will explain at your appointment, critical benefits to diagnostic ultrasound of the musculoskeletal system include:
- In the same appointment, the physiatrist can diagnose and then inject pain medicine to treat the condition, thus providing immediate relief.
- Higher resolution sonography provides detailed anatomy of the affected area.
- The ability to view a ligament, muscle, tendon or joint during a range of motion or under applied stress.
- Real Time visualization enables very precise monitoring of the therapeutic procedure.
- No radiation exposure.
- No contrast dye needed.
At Montefiore Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, we employ a multidisciplinary team approach using physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise programs and orthotic (splint/brace) management to provide our patients non-surgical options.
