Medical Student Education Program

About the Medical Student Education Program

The Medical Student Education Program at Montefiore Einstein aims to introduce students to the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) across the entire spectrum of care. Students have the opportunity to rotate through acute rehabilitation, subacute and long-term care settings, as well as outpatient venues that cover the full range of physiatric specialty and subspecialty services, including:

  • General rehabilitation
  • Neuromusculoskeletal care
  • Sports medicine
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • Pediatric rehabilitation
  • Electrodiagnosis
  • Prosthetics
  • Orthotics
  • Spasticity management
  • Spinal cord injury rehabilitation
  • Interventional pain management

Students may assist in various physiatric procedures, including joint and soft tissue injections, botulinum toxin injections, baclofen pump care, neurolytic blocks, myofascial manual medicine techniques and ultrasound or fluoroscopic-guided procedures.

Students will observe and participate in the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team process and become familiar with the treatment modalities utilized by physical, occupational and speech and language pathologists.

Students will engage in the PM&R residency didactic program, which includes journal clubs, lectures and various educational presentations.

Third-Year Students

As of 2022, we are proud to participate in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) third-year selective program. This Program is not available to visiting students.

The PM&R selective is a two-week program that rotates students through inpatient and outpatient settings. Students will learn to conduct a physiatric history and physical examination, along with functional assessments, mental status evaluations and durable medical equipment (DME) assessments. They may assist in various physiatric procedures, including joint and soft tissue injections, botulinum toxin injections, baclofen pump management, neurolytic blocks, myofascial manual medicine techniques and ultrasound- or fluoroscopic-guided procedures. Students will participate in the PM&R residency didactic program, which includes journal clubs, lectures and other educational presentations. A dedicated student didactic session will focus on disability education and etiquette.

Fourth-Year Students

The PM&R fourth-year electives are four weeks long for both AECOM students and visiting students. All electives for credit towards graduation must be arranged directly through the Montefiore Einstein registrar. Elective course descriptions, rotation dates and application process information can be found here: https://einsteinregistrar.org/visiting-students/. Please check this site regularly for updates. AECOM typically posts its elective availability on the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) in April of that academic year.

Please note that an elective is neither required for nor guarantees an interview with our Program.
