What Is a Hip Injury?
A hip injury refers to any damage or trauma to the structures in or around the hip joint. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint, in which the femoral head (top of the thighbone) fits into the acetabulum of the pelvis. This joint is strong yet vulnerable to injury from falls, sports, overuse or aging. Common injuries include fractures, dislocations, cartilage tears, inflammation of the bursa, strains and sprains, tendonitis and osteoarthritis.
Symptoms of hip injuries include persistent pain when walking or putting weight on the joint, as well as swelling, bruising, numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs. The Montefiore Einstein Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will create a custom recovery plan tailored to your diagnosis. Recovery programs typically include physical therapy, home exercise programs and non-opioid pain management regimens. Our experts specialize in diagnosing and treating a wide range of hip injuries, two of which are listed below.
