Our Approach to Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation
The Montefiore Einstein Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Program, located at Montefiore Hospital, Wakefield Campus in the Bronx, provides intensive hospital-based services for patients recovering from surgery, illness or injury. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists, including physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and social workers, collaborates to provide care that supports recovery, independence and optimal outcomes.
All patients who come for rehabilitation have:
- An initial assessment to determine the extent of physical, cognitive and communication impairments
- The development of an individualized treatment plan based on individual needs and goals
- Physical therapy to restore mobility, strength and balance through exercises and specialized techniques
- The use of assistive devices to support mobility and activities of daily living
- Occupational therapy to improve daily activities and promote independence
- Speech therapy as needed to address communication, cognitive and swallowing impairments
- A neuropsychological evaluation and treatment as needed to support emotional, psychological and social challenges
- Emotional support and encouragement to address emotional challenges and promote participation with all therapies
- Collaboration between a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and social workers
- Patience, dedication and consistent effort from both the healthcare team and the individual for successful rehabilitation

We ensure that every patient and their caregivers receive education and training beginning on the first day, and we include them in all decision-making.
Stroke Rehabilitation
Once a person is stable, an individualized treatment plan is developed that may include new medications as well as starting a personalized rehabilitation plan to minimize any potential disability that could result from the stroke. Early rehabilitation is vital to a successful recovery. The Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation team will provide the following support for recovery:
- Daily evaluations by your physician to ensure your medical condition is optimized
- Physical and occupational therapy to address any functional deficits
- Speech and language therapy to address communication difficulties and swallowing issues
- Stroke-specific risk factor modification and education based on American Heart Association and American Stroke Association guidelines
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Rehabilitation
When treating traumatic brain injury (TBI), many factors—including the size, severity and location of the injury—influence treatment and the speed of recovery. One critical element of a person’s recovery is physical and occupational therapy. Our specialists can provide:
- Physical and occupational therapy to address any functional deficits
- Speech and language therapy to address communication difficulties and swallowing issues
- Neuropsychological evaluation and treatment for cognitive rehabilitation and managing behavioral and emotional challenges
Rehabilitation After Orthopedic Surgery
Following orthopedic surgery at Montefiore Einstein, our team focuses on providing the best patient-centered care. With innovative treatments and ongoing research, our specialists offer extensive expertise in managing recovery for various conditions. Our inpatient acute rehabilitation services will help patients restore movement, strength and function, supporting proper body movement, reducing pain and swelling and accelerating their return to daily activities. Rehabilitation services may include:
- Postoperative evaluation by all team members upon admission to the unit
- Pain management strategies to control discomfort and promote healing
- Gradual progression of weight-bearing activities and functional movements, as indicated by the surgeon and rehabilitation doctors
- Education on proper body mechanics and movement patterns to prevent strain or re-injury
- Close collaboration with the surgical team and regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress and adjust the rehabilitation plan as needed
Amputee Rehabilitation
Montefiore Einstein is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care using the latest treatment techniques and state-of-the-art modalities. At the Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Program, our goal is for amputees to return to a physical state that allows them to participate actively at home, at work and in the community, enjoying life to the fullest. Physical therapy is recommended before, during and after prosthetic fittings. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists will coordinate care with your surgical team and prosthetic providers.
Medically Complex Rehabilitation
The Montefiore Einstein Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation team specializes in addressing the needs of medically complex patients, including post-transplant patients, those with cancer, cardiopulmonary disease or other complex medical conditions. Advanced monitoring, hemodialysis and respiratory support are available as needed for patients.
Recovery at Montefiore Einstein
Patients admitted for inpatient acute rehabilitation at Montefiore Hospital, Wakefield Campus, will be cared for by a multidisciplinary team, led by one of our expert physiatrists, also known as doctors of physical medicine and rehabilitation. A rehabilitation medicine doctor is on site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure that the highest level of care is always immediately available for our patients.
Therapy sessions will include hands-on activities and the use of different kinds of equipment. Sessions will be provided for a minimum of three hours per day, five days a week, depending on your tolerance and ability to participate actively. Therapists are available seven days a week.
Your care plan may focus on:
- Training for activities of daily living such as transfers, standing and/or walking
- Building endurance through strength and conditioning exercises
- Adaptive strategies to improve communication and safe swallowing
- Strategies to improve memory, concentration, judgment and problem solving
- Medication management
- Disease-specific education
- Strategies for returning home and to community life
- Caregiver education and training
