Fellowship Highlights

Fellows of the Montefiore Einstein Cardiology in-house call training program, which encompasses two programs treated and functioning as one, will enjoy access to an exciting curriculum led by collaborative, congenial, and supportive faculty. The twelve-member clinical fellow class of diverse backgrounds and interests regularly interact with advanced fellows in interventional, structural, heart failure, electrophysiology, and cardiac imaging, with opportunities to gain expertise in a robust array of pathologies and procedures.

Additionally, with multiple hospital training sites, fellows work side-by-side with more than 70 full-time faculty members of all cardiology subspecialties, many with local, national, and international leadership roles. This unique access to leaders in their fields allows for excellent subspecialty matches and job placement following completion of the cardiology training program.

Phases & Settings of Care

The Montefiore Einstein Cardiology Fellowship is the ideal training program for candidates seeking to immerse themselves in a comprehensive, professional, and esteemed learning environment. The training program spans all aspects of cardiology in several phases of care and in a range of hospital settings. Graduates become facile in “bread and butter” cardiology, as well as advanced cardiac care, including:

  • Cardiac intensive care
  • Advanced mechanical support
  • Cardiac transplant
  • Complex interventional and structural procedures
  • Advanced electrophysiology procedures
  • Advanced imaging

Certifications

All Montefiore Einstein Cardiology fellows have the opportunity to achieve COCATS level 2 certification in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology, and are eligible for board certification. Additionally, the third year of the fellowship allows trainees to specialize in a particular area of interest (e.g. echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, and cardiac CT, to name a few).

Learning Environment

The primary training locations are the Montefiore Einstein Moses and Weiler campuses, with additional rotation sites including Jacobi Medical Center. Montefiore Einstein serves the Bronx and surrounding communities, allowing trainees exposure to a wide variety of pathology and severity, as well as an opportunity to serve a diverse demographic of patients needing care and expertise.

Notable History of Montefiore Einstein Cardiology

Established in 1884, Montefiore Medical Center was named after philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore. Throughout its nearly 140 years of history, Montefiore has exemplified excellence and innovation.

  • 1930 Montefiore conducts clinical trials on the use of diuretics for treating edema in heart failure.
  • 1946 The Division of Cardiology begins as a postgraduate training program and opens one of the first cardiac cath laboratories in the US.
  • 1950s Montefiore advanced research on cardiac catheterization and surgery becoming a leading center for heart disease.
  • 1950s Montefiore physicians develop the heart-lung machine used in surgery to correct congenital heart defects.
  • 1959 Dr. Seymour Furman passes a copper wire, the tip wrapped in tin foil, into the right ventricle—inventing the transvenous pacemaker.
  • 1960 The first CABG in the United States was performed at Jacobi Medical Center / Einstein by Dr. Robert Goetz. Dr. Edward Sonnenblick develops concepts of preload, afterload, and contractility in the heart.
  • 1970s Montefiore invents cardiac pacemaker monitoring by the telephone, burst pacing, and EP studies under Dr. John Fisher.
  • 1980s Montefiore leads enrollment for the first TIMI studies, along with Brigham, Duke, and Cleveland Clinic.
  • 2010s Leader in the development of durable mechanical support and transplant. Our structural heart interventions program started. The advanced cardiac imaging program blossomed.
  • 2022 The first heart transplant from an HIV+ donor to an HIV+ recipient in the world is done at Montefiore Einstein.
