Leaders in the Science of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery

We are actively developing new cardiothoracic and vascular surgical treatments including those that use the most minimally invasive techniques to reduce recovery time. We lead the way with over a century of research breakthroughs and have developed many of the latest surgical techniques used such as being one of the first in the nation to perform robotic heart surgery.

We are spearheading clinical trials exploring promising new surgical techniques and therapies with notable NIH-funded grants, which have resulted in several publications in the highest impact factor journals and led to paradigm shifts in the way we practice cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.

State-of-the-Art Technology & Surgery

Our multidisciplinary team of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, cardiologists, and cardiac imaging specialists use the most advanced technology to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. Montefiore Einstein Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department Chairman, Robert E. Michler, MD was among the first surgeons in the United States to develop robotic heart surgery. His work expedited FDA approval of robotic heart surgery for mitral valve repair and coronary artery bypass surgery. Our robotic and minimally invasive heart surgery program, led by Joseph DeRose, MD, is now one of the busiest in the tri-state area.

We Were Among the First in the Nation to Perform Minimally-Invasive Robotic Heart Surgery.
