Plastic Surgery Residency Program
Welcome to the Montefiore Plastic Surgery residency program!
The Plastic Surgery program at Montefiore currently offers a six-year integrated residency training program. The program matches two residents per year. Medical students interested in the integrated pathway should apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) or via the PSCA platform. Please note that medical students must also register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
The program is an ACGME accredited training program that provides a comprehensive educational opportunity that is comprised of structural education, research, and clinical experience. The program is led by Evan Garfein, MD, Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a nationally recognized plastic surgeon specializing in microsurgical and complex reconstruction.
Since its inception in 1959, the program at Montefiore has been at the forefront and our residents train with some of the most experienced and innovative plastic surgeons in practice today. Current residents train at affiliated hospitals of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in a variety of settings from tertiary care centers to a Level 1 Trauma Center, including:
Montefiore Moses Campus/Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM)
This is the primary training site for the residents. At the Moses Division residents are exposed to a clinical experience covering the breadth and depth of Plastic Surgery and its subspecialties.
The Hutchinson Metro Center
The “Hutch” is part of the Montefiore Health system. The Hutch is a 12-floor patient center, multi-disciplinary diagnostic and treatment center located across the road from the Einstein Division. It is a modern, efficient setting for ambulatory surgeries and home to state-of-the-art operating rooms, PACU bays, and advanced imaging center, on-site laboratory services and pharmacy, together with new primary and specialty care specialties. This facility provides and integrated end-to-end patient experience for the large Bronx population.
Montefiore Einstein Campus (Einstein Division)
The Einstein Campus, adjacent to Albert Einstein College of Medicine and approximately 10 minutes from the Moses campus, houses the Einstein Hospital and The Hutchinson Metro Center, in addition to other facilities. This campus provides a complementary experience to the Moses Campus. The majority of the breast cancer inpatients at Montefiore are treated at Einstein Hospital. All gender reassignment surgeries are performed here.
Jacobi Medical Center
Jacobi Medical Center is a large city hospital belonging to the Health and Hospitals Corporation of New York City. It is the Level 1 Trauma Center designated for our region. It is an affiliate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where resident trainees receive an educational experience of the highest caliber. Specifically, the rotations at Jacobi are focused on the areas of trauma, SICU and burns.
The structure of the program allows for residents to experience a broad variety of plastic surgery cases, including:
- Craniofacial surgery and congenital anomalies
- Microsurgical composite tissue transfer
- Replantation
- General reconstruction of the face, trunk and extremities
- Transgender surgery
- Cosmetic surgery
- Breast reconstruction
- Body Contouring
The early work of such distinguished plastic surgeons as Michael Lewin and Ravelo Argamaso, led to the foundation of Montefiore as one of the oldest continually active craniofacial centers in the world.
In the early 1970s, the Division of Plastic Surgery was also the first EMS-designated replantation center in the Northeast and the first to perform microsurgery, under the leadership of Dr. Berish Strauch, in this area, including peripheral nerve surgery. Montefiore is currently one of only two replantation centers in New York City. In addition, the residents rotate to one of the city’s major burn units, located at Jacobi Medical Center. The burn unit is staffed by plastic surgery attendings and residents, and provides care to about 200 patients annually.
