General Surgery Residency Program
Welcome to the Montefiore General Surgery residency program!
The Department of Surgery doesn’t just select residents; it selects the academic surgeons of the future. Montefiore prides itself on training the next generation of healthcare leaders and delivering science-driven, patient-centered care. This philosophy guides the training activities of this highly competitive residency program and provides recruits with a superior clinical experience that aptly prepares them to be leaders in their field.
As the University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore is a premier academic medical center nationally renowned for its clinical excellence, scientific discovery and commitment to its community. The general surgery residency program is an ACGME-accredited program that involves five years of clinical training across seven different hospitals, including Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. This experience provides residents with exposure to a variety of clinical settings—from tertiary care to Level 1 trauma center. The high volume, diversity, and complexity of pathology fuel the clinical experience.
With 10 categorical positions and approximately 74 trainees at any given time, the general surgery residency at Montefiore is one of the largest programs in the United States.
Unlike many programs which emphasize more general surgical tasks, our general surgery residency follows current trends in the field and strives to develop surgical specialists who excel in specific clinical areas. This model places trainees "in the trenches" where they work at the side of leading specialists in the areas of general, endocrine, colorectal, foregut, minimally invasive, trauma, critical care, endoscopy, pediatric, breast, cardiothoracic, surgical oncology and plastic and reconstructive surgery
Residents obtain progressive advancement in case complexity. At the culmination of their residency, the majority of our trainees pursue fellowships or specialized training programs at prestigious institutions.
