As part of your care for certain cancer treatments—such as surgery—you may decide to undergo reconstructive surgery.
The plastic and reconstructive surgeons at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center are among the best in the world.
Innovations in Care
Our internationally renowned reconstructive surgeons are continually researching and developing innovative procedures and technological advancements that produce excellent outcomes. Pioneers in the use of 3D imaging and virtual surgical planning, surgeons can print 3D patient models to help with surgical planning, intraoperative decision making and patient education. We are also one of the few breast centers in the US to offer surgical navigation for breast-conserving surgery.
About Reconstructive Surgery
Reconstructive surgery is a type of plastic surgery focused on restoring form, function and natural appearance after or during cancer treatment. People with the following types of cancer may benefit from reconstructive surgery:
A Compassionate Approach
The team at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center is uniquely equipped to undertake the most challenging and delicate reconstructive surgical procedures. We offer the most advanced care and comprehensive support designed to help you at every step of your cancer journey.
For example, our In It Together program provides assistance to breast cancer patients while they’re recovering from reconstructive surgery. With In It Together, you receive emotional support from a network of former patients, and financial support for your recovery period.
Reconstructive Surgery: What To Expect
Our surgeons work closely with your cancer specialists to understand your surgical needs and options. Through virtual planning, you’ll see what your body will look like after your reconstructive surgery.
Depending on the type of cancer you have and the location of tumors, we offer several procedures to address the changes your body experienced from cancer surgery. Our surgical coordinator will help you with scheduling and surgery preparation.
Reconstructive Surgery To Treat Breast Cancer
To reduce surgical risk and improve post-surgical healing and recovery, breast cancer reconstructive surgery is often performed at the same time as mastectomy or lumpectomy procedures. We offer multiple types of reconstructive surgery for those undergoing breast cancer treatment, including:
- Autologous tissue reconstruction: This uses muscle and fat from your own body (usually from the back or the stomach) to recreate the shape of the breast for those who have undergone a mastectomy (complete breast removal).
- Oncoplastic surgery: This combines complete tumor removal with reconstructive surgery to recreate the shape of the breast for those who need to undergo a lumpectomy (a type of breast cancer surgery).
- Tissue expander and implant reconstruction: This uses tissue expanders (empty breast implants) followed by saline or silicone implants to recreate the shape of the breast for those who have undergone a mastectomy (complete breast removal)
Reconstructive Surgery To Treat Head and Neck Cancer
The treatment of head and neck cancer can result in significant functional and aesthetic changes. Our surgeons perform advanced reconstructive surgery to rebuild damaged bone and tissue, maximize function and enhance appearance.
Reconstructive Surgery To Treat Sarcoma
After treatment of sarcoma, our reconstructive surgeons work with neurosurgeons and surgeons who specialize in thoracic and vascular surgery to restore function in the most difficult to treat challenges.
Reconstructive Surgery To Treat Skin Cancer
For people undergoing skin cancer treatment, we offer:
- Reconstruction following ablative surgery (a procedure that uses heat or cold to burn or freeze solid tumors)
- Reconstructive rhinoplasty (to reshape the nose) or facial reconstruction after Mohs surgery
- Reconstructing the skin after removing skin cancer cells
