Message from the Residency Program Director
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at Montefiore Einstein
As a proud alumnus of the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Montefiore Einstein, it is my absolute privilege to now serve as its Program Director and welcome 17 exceptional residents per year (11 categorical and 6 advanced positions) into our community.
We are an inclusive and collegial department and consistently endeavor to cultivate a learning environment that prepares our residents to become leaders in perioperative care and patient safety. Whether you aspire to become a grant-funded physician-scientist, expert clinician, master educator or healthcare leader, our residency program will support and guide you towards success as you progress along your path of professional development. Our renowned faculty help to encourage a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and continuous learning, ensuring that our trainees grow both personally and professionally. The program values teamwork, innovation, compassion, and integrity, and emphasizes that continuous personal development forms the foundation for quality patient care, academic contribution, and service.
Collectively, our department demonstrates its dedication to innovation in academic and clinical anesthesiology through simulation, research, and mentorship. We offer a plethora of opportunities to participate in research projects, quality improvement projects, and scholarly activity. Residents can engage with clinical trials and project-based research early in their training and are afforded the assistance of dedicated research coordinators to advise them on study protocols and Institutional Review Board (IRB) guidelines for human subject research.
The faculty is fully committed to facilitating residents’ continuous acquisition of knowledge, clinical skills, and a personal commitment to excellence in order to treat, guide, and advocate for our diverse patient population. Our residents participate in comprehensive clinical activities delivered to communities across the full range of socioeconomic strata with an emphasis on New York City’s historically underserved populations. They are trained to identify health care disparities, negotiate the complexities of access and available resources, and are consequently instilled with a sense of social justice through the practice of our specialty.
Accredited in 1960, our Anesthesiology Residency Program is steeped in history and has enjoyed strong support and sustained growth since its inception. We are part of the largest health system in the Bronx. Montefiore Einstein Health System encompasses 11 hospitals and 180 locations throughout the Bronx and Westchester County and provides high quality healthcare to all populations that it serves. Montefiore Einstein is not just a medical institution; it is a community, a family, and a driving force behind compassionate and transformative healthcare. We are equally proud of our medical center and our department’s shared history and are continually building on our strengths to be the program of choice for highly capable providers and trainees that share our mission. Our residents go on to successfully complete fellowships, work in major academic institutions, join private practices, and remain highly successful in the field of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Management.
Our goal in resident selection is to identify a group of highly motivated, personable team players who support our mission to advance medicine and surgery through equitable, evidence-based, and patient-centered care, who will ultimately help shape the future of healthcare. We invite you to learn more about our department and hope to meet many of you (virtually) this interview season, so that you can learn more about the unparalleled training our residency program provides in preparing the anesthesiologists of today to be leaders of tomorrow.
