Neurointerventional Radiology

The Department of Radiology at Montefiore established the dedicated Interventional Neuroradiology section of the Division of Neuroradiology in order to treat patients of all ages with vascular diseases of the central nervous system and spine, particularly aneurysms and stroke.

The division includes four dedicated interventional neuroradiologists. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center designated by The Joint Commission, we offer the largest interventional pain management radiology program on the East Coast, and our stroke and neurology staff has expanded exponentially over the past few years. 

We provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care. Our team offers treatment for the entire spectrum of neurovascular diseases, including these:

• Acute stroke
• Brain aneurysm
• Brain arteriovenous malformation (AVMs)
• Carotid-cavernous fistula
• Dural arteriovenous fistula
• Spinal arteriovenous malformations
• Spinal arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs)
• Cancer (brain, head, neck and spine)
• Epistaxis Vein of Galen malformations
• Vasospasm

We also provide pain management care for oncologic discomfort from tumors, back pain due to degenerative disease, trauma, sympathetic dystrophies and postoperative back pain, which we treat with spinal stimulators.

Spine

• CT or fluoroscopy-guided lumbar puncture, lumbar drain placement or myelogram
• CT and fluoroscopic-guided percutaneous biopsies and drainages
• CT-guided epidural and perineural spine injections
• CT-guided blood patches for headache management
• CT or fluoroscopy-guided bone marrow biopsy
• Percutaneous vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and sacroplasty to reduce the compression of vertebral fractures often associated with osteoporosis
• Percutaneous spinal stimulators
• Percutaneous intrathecal pumps

Intracranial

• Thrombectomy for stroke management
• Intracranial treatment of atherosclerotic disease with angioplasty and stenting
• Endovascular coil embolization/stenting of aneurysms
• Treatment of vasospasm, including pharmacology and/or angioplasty
• Treatment of intracranial AVM or dural AVF with coils and/or liquid embolic agents
• Transarterial, transvenous and direct puncture embolization of congenital and acquired AVFs and congenital AVMs
• Transarterial embolizations of spinal AVMs and AVFs
• Wada testing in collaboration with the Department of Neurology
• Temporary and permanent balloon occlusion of intracranial and brachiocephalic vessels

Head and Neck

• Extracranial carotid angioplasty and stenting
• Tumor embolization and covered stenting for aggressive neck tumors
• CT-guided biopsy of head and neck pathology

Research

Ongoing research is a crucial element of our mission to develop critical breakthroughs and treat pain, vascular diseases and spinal disorders. Our distinguished staff members have published papers on endovascular transvenous embolization of sinus pericranii, deep brain reversible encephalopathy, computed tomography guided sacroplasty, stroke prevention, back pain management and stenting for brain aneurysms, with various clinical, basic and translational studies in progress at all times.
