Division of Ultrasound

For decades, the Division of Ultrasound at Montefiore has provided the highest level of diagnosis and interpretation of ultrasound examinations.

Our team of board certified radiologists and sonographers, accredited by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, perform and interpret more than 95,000 examinations annually, including these:

• Abdominal ultrasound
• Pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound
• Obstetric ultrasound
• Renal and retroperitoneal ultrasound
• Scrotal and prostate ultrasound
• Thyroid, parathyroid and other superficial ultrasound
• Neonatal brain ultrasound
• Musculoskeletal ultrasound
• Peripheral vascular ultrasound
• Intraoperative ultrasound
• Biopsy and aspiration/drainage ultrasound-guided procedures.

We have state-of-the-art, high-resolution, real-time duplex, color Doppler and 3-D/4-D ultrasound equipment. We provide high-level, compassionate service in three hospital and several outpatient facilities. We frequently serve as a regional referral center for patients who are sent for a second opinion after being imaged locally.

In addition to our clinical service, our physicians provide intensive educational training for medical students, residents and fellows, and they are engaged in research projects within the department and in conjunction with the Abdominal Imaging Division. The division's faculty members have lectured on the use of ultrasound in patient diagnosis throughout the world, and they have made many contributions to the ultrasound literature.

Research Projects

• Determining the incidence of hydronephrosis in various clinical settings to determine whether there are clinical factors that could predict which patients would benefit from a renal ultrasound and how a result of hydronephrosis affected patient management
• The clinical utility of renal ultrasound in the setting of acute kidney injury
• A multimodality review of anterior abdominal wall pathology
• The study of subtle ultrasound imaging findings to improve ultrasound sensitivity in detecting pathology
• The use of 3-D ultrasound to enhance visualization of thyroid and parathyroid pathology, to evaluate the vasculature in renal and hepatic transplants, and to aid in the differentiation of benign and malignant lymph nodes
