Our Approach to Living Organ Donation & Transplantation
We are a national leader, with more than 40 years of expertise in living donor transplantation and some of the highest survival rates in the U.S., including 100% survival of live liver donor transplant recipients.
Our world-renowned living donor program offers a way for individuals to get a lifesaving transplant sooner and offers patients the best chances for long-term survival. Live donor transplant success rates have been shown to be equivalent to those of deceased donor transplants. Family, friends and altruistic strangers are all potential donors, reducing the wait time for transplantation in matched recipients.
A First-of-its-Kind Digital Tool for Finding a Living Donor
For our patients in need of a kidney or liver transplant, we created the first-of-its-kind revolutionary I Want to Live Digital Tool which uses artificial intelligence (AI) and video to tell their story of why they want to live. It offers a completely novel and unique approach to helping those who need a transplant overcome the hurdle of asking for help and reaching potential donors.
State-of-the-Art Living Organ Transplantation
Our Center is committed to continuous innovation in transplant treatment and procedures. Our transplant surgeons utilize the most advanced surgical approaches available today, including minimally invasive and robotically-assisted surgery for faster recovery as well as bloodless kidney transplant for those with religious or medical restrictions. Our continued development of newly-emerging techniques and technologies allows us to offer access to leading-edge surgical treatments and has made living organ donation safer and easier on our patients.
Living Organ Donation
Living Kidney Donation
Live kidney donation can shorten lengthy wait times, expedite surgery and potentially save a life. Living donors increase the number of kidneys available and make it possible for more patients to get transplants. Living organ donors make the best donors because living donor kidneys usually last longer and start working faster than deceased donor kidneys.
Living Liver Donation
Living organ donation for liver transplant in adults and children can offer patients the best chances for long-term success by avoiding the long periods of waiting that often come with receiving deceased donor transplants. Live donation may be especially beneficial for pediatric patients, who often have long waits because of the lack of a suitably sized match from a deceased donor.
Becoming a Living Organ Donor
A living organ donor can be a relative, friend or simply an altruistic stranger. All donors can remain anonymous, if they so choose. All candidates undergo a thorough independent screening process, where they’re provided extensive education about the surgery and informed of any potential risks. In the instance a candidate lives far away, a portion of the evaluation can be done remotely.
