One of the Longest-Running Adult & Pediatric Transplant Programs in the World

The Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation is an internationally recognized center for adult and pediatric transplantation in heart, lung, kidney, pancreas and liver with some of the highest survival rates in the U.S., including 100% survival of live liver donor transplant recipients and best risk-adjusted one-year survival heart transplant outcomes. Home to the first lung-liver transplant in New York State and one of the few hospitals in the nation to perform dual organ transplants for patients with simultaneous heart, liver, kidney or lung failure, we have one of the longest-running transplant programs in the world.

We performed one of the world’s first pediatric kidney transplants, established one of the nation’s first pediatric transplant program and dialysis centers, as well as one of the longest NIH-funded liver research centers. We performed the first transplantation of a viral hepatitis-infected liver into an uninfected recipient treated with antiviral therapy post-transplant. As a global leader in the most complex transplantation cases, we performed the world’s first HIV-positive to HIV-positive heart transplant and are one of the few centers in the nation and the only destination in New York that performs bloodless heart transplantation.

Center for Transplantation Highlights

Leaders in the Science of Transplantation

We have been leading the way with groundbreaking research for over six decades and continue advancing the field through discovery and innovation. Our researchers have made substantial contributions, including transplantation for highly immune-sensitized patients, understanding the mechanisms of organ rejection, and ways to perform transplants in people with viral hepatitis and HIV. We are also using stem-cell therapy to “grow” new tissues and organs and are one of the few centers in the world researching stem cell therapy for regenerating heart muscle, particularly for left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients.

State-of-the-Art Techniques & Technology

We utilize the latest diagnostics and therapeutic techniques and technologies for the most complex transplantations and life-threatening organ failure. Our world-renowned transplant surgeons use the latest minimally-invasive and robotically-assisted surgical approaches for faster recovery. We are leaders in the science of living donor transplantation, with state-of-the-art desensitization programs and an advanced immunology laboratory for patients with circulating antibodies and incompatible blood type (ABO-incompatible).

We were the first in the Northeast to eliminate the need for liver transplantation through the use of MARS liver dialysis technology. We also performed the first transplantation of a viral hepatitis-infected liver into an uninfected recipient treated with antiviral therapy post-transplant, and the world’s first HIV-positive to HIV-positive heart transplant, innovations that expand the pool of donors so that more people will have quicker access to a lifesaving organ.

A National Leader in Living Organ Transplantation

Our robust living donor program offers a way for individuals to get a lifesaving transplant sooner. Family, friends and anonymous living donors participate in the program, reducing the wait time for transplantation in matched recipients. Live donor transplant success rates have been shown to be equivalent to deceased donor transplant success rates. At Montefiore Einstein, we are among the best in the nation with three-year liver transplant survival rates of 100% for both pediatric and adult recipients of live donor liver transplants.

For our patients in need of a kidney or liver transplant, we created the first-of-its-kind revolutionary I Want to Live Digital Tool which uses artificial intelligence (AI) and video to tell their story of why they want to live. This proprietary tool offers a completely novel and unique approach to helping those who need a transplant overcome the hurdle of asking for help and reaching potential donors.

Montefiore Einstein is proud to be a member of the American Society of Transplantation's Living Donor Circle of Excellence program. The program recognizes companies that have policies in place to support living donor employees who donate a kidney or a part of their liver.

Living Donor Transplant Survival Rates Among the Highest in the Nation

Some of Our Stories of Lives Saved

  • Adriana & Nicole

Four days into her life, little Adriana became very ill. It was, among other things, her liver. Her desperate mother posted a plea on social media, asking for a living organ donor. Maybe someone out there would respond.

  • Paul & Jeremy

Blood was backing up into Paul’s veins. And if any of them burst, he could have bled to death. Facing peril, he found humor.

  • Rebecca & Chris

After tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, army veteran Chris Forthman had seen so much evil in the world. No wonder the greatest act of kindness started with him.
