Physician Assistant Residency Program
Education is a key part of our mission at the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. Our unique, one-year residency program, offered with our academic affiliate, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, trains physician assistants (PAs) to become highly skilled at treating acute and critically-ill adult patients. The program attracts both new graduates and seasoned PAs who are seeking a structured educational experience.
Curriculum and Teaching Methods
Our PA residents function as house staff members. They must meet the same coverage and call requirements as the surgery or medical residents completing the same rotation. The teaching method emphasizes hands-on case management of all patients, including: a history, physical exam, interpretation of laboratory tests, x-rays, cardio-respiratory physiology data, case presentation, developing a plan of care putting that plan into action.
PA residents participate in daily teaching rounds and weekly grand rounds and receive instruction through lectures and unit-based conferences. All residents follow the guidelines set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Rotations
PA residents complete 12 four-week rotations at the critical care units of Montefiore-Einstein's East and West campuses. In all locations, the ICU team includes critical care medicine fellows, staff PAs, and rotating house staff under the direction of an attending intensivist physician. Rotation schedules include the Medical ICU, the Cardiothoracic ICU, the Surgical ICU, the Neurosurgical ICU as well as the Critical Care consult service. Rotation schedules can be flexible to accommodate a resident's interest in a specific area.
A stipend of $50,000 is paid over the year. Each PA resident is awarded a certificate and a $5,000 bonus recognizing successful completion of the program.
