Computed Tomography (CT) Scan
A computed tomography scan (commonly called a CAT scan) is a painless procedure that doctors use to identify some medical conditions, diseases or trauma.
A CT scan uses X-rays and a sophisticated computer to view specific three-dimensional details of the body's anatomy. A doctor will order a CT scan—which is different from a traditional X-ray—because it lets the doctor see parts of the body from different angles and sometimes in 3-D in order to achieve one or more of the following:
- Get a better look at fractures and internal damage or see what is causing symptoms such as abdominal pain
- Identify or rule out certain diseases such as tumors
- Determine the extent of a problem
- Plan for an upcoming surgery
- See inside the body to take a more precise biopsy
- Evaluate the effect of medical treatment
