X-ray and Fluoroscopy

An X-ray (radiography) allows doctors to take pictures of the inside of your body to see tissue, organs and bones and learn whether something is wrong internally.

Fluoroscopy—commonly used to evaluate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon—uses X-rays to create a "video." A continuous X-ray beam is passed over the area being examined and produces a video that allows doctors to see different parts of the body. This is a safe procedure, which uses a very low dose of ionizing (high energy) radiation.

Fluoroscopy helps doctors learn more about gastrointestinal conditions like ulcers, tumors, hiatal hernias, reflux, scarring and inflammation, and blockages. The tests used can include the following:

Fluoroscopy is also used to check kidney function in angiography and venography procedures (placement of tubes in an artery or vein), in pain management procedures such as nerve root blocks, and in some imaging-guided biopsies.
