Our Approach to Chronic Total Occlusion Revascularization
At Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care, our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons are world-renowned specialists in the most advanced revascularization procedures, the most common of which are percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). We’re ranked in the top 1% of all hospitals in the nation for Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery according to U.S. News & World Report.
Chronic Total Occlusion
Chronic total occlusion (CTO) occurs when the complete blockage of a coronary artery lasts three months or longer.
In patients with CTO, plaque slowly accumulates within the walls of the coronary arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart. If enough plaque builds up, it can completely block the artery. Plaque can also cause blood clot formation and suddenly block the artery, leading to acute coronary syndrome or heart attack.
Revascularization Procedures
Coronary revascularization typically refers to two specific procedures:
1. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a minimally-invasive procedure that restores blood flow from the inside.
2. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure used to treat coronary heart disease by diverting blood around narrowed or clogged sections of the major arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart.
