Montefiore Einstein has a history of doing more for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) community and providing leading-edge LGBTQ+ care in our hospitals, community health centers and specialty clinics. We were the first health system to have a float in the NYC Pride March in 2016. We have been designated eight years in a row as a leader in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign.

For 30 years the Adolescent AIDS Program has been on the forefront of HIV/AIDS care for youth. Recently we expanded our mission to serve all youth ages 13-24, breaking new ground in the fields of LGBTQ+ healthcare as well as HIV/STI prevention. The AAP is available to consult with clinical and community-based programs interested in instituting a number of policies and procedures to improve the quality of care offered to LGBTQ+ patients, including:
- Training staff to ask and use patients’ preferred names and gender pronouns
- Providing non-gender-specific bathroom facilities
- Distributing LGBTQ+ friendly information in waiting areas
- LGBTQ+ sensitivity trainings for clinical and non-clinical staff

Founded in 2013, the Oval Center is Montefiore Einstein’s newest site providing care to the LGBTQ+ community. The Oval Center staff receive annual LGBTQ+ cultural competency training. The Oval Center provides care to anyone age 16 and over, including a range of services that include:

Montefiore Einstein’s Center for Positive Living/ID Clinic was founded in the 1980s as one of New York State’s first expert HIV programs serving adults age 21 and over. Today, we care for more adults living with HIV/AIDS than any other site in New York State.

Our MMG sites have a 50-year history of serving our community through a network of community-based clinics. MMG also provides primary care and HIV early intervention services through 10 community health centers staffed with doctors and nurse practitioners who are competent in LGBTQ+ medical care and sensitive to the needs of the LGBTQ+ community. In a safe and sensitive environment, we provide:
Primary care services and OB/GYN care for lesbians and bisexual women.
Primary care, including general sexual health care.
HIV care and PrEP for HIV prevention for gay men and other men who have sex with men; and transition-related primary care for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.

Montefiore Einstein provides surgical services to the Trans* community—including the latest advancements in gender confirmation surgery tailored to each patient’s goals—under the leadership of Evan Garfein, MD, Chief, Plastic Surgery.
This specialized team works with a multidisciplinary team of medical and surgical colleagues to provide the entire gamut of surgical services to Trans* patients. Minimally invasive techniques are available when applicable.
Dr. Garfein and his team are members of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). In addition to Dr. Garfein, the team of Trans* surgery and urology service providers includes Oren Tepper, MD; Lawrence Draper, MD; Paul Weiss, MD; Teresa Benacquista, MD; and Katie Weichman, MD. Together, this team is dedicated to serving the Trans* community and providing the highest level of service to patients seeking surgical reconstruction in a safe and caring setting.

Gender and Sexual Minority Health Research
We are developing an interdisciplinary initiative for gender and sexual minority health research, focused on conducting pragmatic research aimed at improving the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ communities. We are also developing training and educational programs for current and future medical providers in LGBTQ+ sensitive care.
