Our Approach to Wound Care
The Montefiore Einstein Wound Care Program brings together renowned specialists, including vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitative medicine experts, infectious disease specialists, nurses, and hyperbaric medicine technicians to help heal wounds that have not responded to standard care and to save limbs at risk of amputation, especially for people with diabetes or weakened immune systems.
Seamless Collaboration for Comprehensive Wound Care
Our multidisciplinary team collaborates with surgical experts who specialize in every part of the body, including podiatrists and surgical teams from, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology (ENT/Head and Neck Surgery), and Gynecologic Surgery to offer leading-edge services and hyperbaric medicine for the treatment of wounds that are both acute (new) and chronic (long-lasting). This includes difficult-to-treat wounds like diabetic wounds, nerve-related wounds (neuropathic), pressure ulcers, ulcers due to circulation problems (ischemic or venous), and surgical wounds.
We offer advanced treatments and leading-edge technologies, including Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), which uses gentle suction to speed healing; specialized surgical and non-surgical treatments; and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), which helps wounds heal by providing 100% pure oxygen.

Advanced Treatments & Services
Comprehensive Wound Assessment & Care Planning
Your care begins with a comprehensive wound assessment and a review of your overall health. Our team will then work with you to develop a personalized care plan designed for your unique needs. We place a special focus on wounds that have not started to heal within two weeks or have not fully healed within six weeks.
Limb Salvage & Specialized Conservative and Surgical Treatments
We offer advanced treatments to help save limbs and heal even the most complex wounds. Our specialists use detailed tests to check your circulation and a full range of surgical and non-surgical options to support your healing journey. We provide this care especially for people with severe injuries like crush injuries or traumatic ischemia (a life-threatening condition where blood flow is cut off by an injury).
Professional Nursing Care & Topical Therapies
Our experienced nursing team provides expert wound care, using specialized dressings and advanced treatments to help manage chronic conditions, such as pressure ulcers, and all other wounds that require specialized care applied directly to the wound.
Hyperbaric Medicine Program
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an advanced treatment that is provided by our specialty-trained doctors and technicians to treat wounds that have not healed with standard care. During HBOT, you rest in a comfortable, clear chamber and breathe pure oxygen, which helps your blood deliver more oxygen to your tissues. This increased delivery of oxygen supports your body’s natural healing, helps fight infection, and encourages the growth of new blood vessels.
Most sessions last about two hours and are given once a day, with most patients needing 30 to 40 treatments to treat conditions that include diabetic ulcers of the lower extremities, soft tissue radionecrosis and osteoradionecrosis, chronic refractory osteomyelitis, compromised skin grafts and flaps, actinomycosis, acute traumatic peripheral ischemia and progressive necrotizing infections (necrotizing fasciitis).
