Montefiore Einstein is ranked in the top 1% of all hospitals in the nation for neurosurgery, according to U.S. News and World Report. The Leo M. Davidoff Department of Neurosurgery—together with the departments of Neurology and Radiology—has led the way in earning and maintaining a Comprehensive Stroke Center designation from The Joint Commission.
The Department of Neurosurgery also plays a critical role in our long-standing and prestigious Level 4 Epilepsy Center designation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.
At the Forefront of Neurosurgical Innovations
On Track for New Breakthroughs
Our unique, multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment combines excellence in clinical care with cutting-edge research, enabling us to deliver the most advanced and personalized care. Among the many approaches we utilize are state-of-the-art imaging, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and the latest genetic or cellular therapies to treat disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Our commitment to research and innovation translates into helping our patients enjoy their lives to their fullest potential.
Revolutionary Surgeries Performed by World-Renowned Neurosurgeons
Distinguished by Unmatched Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Our world-renowned interdisciplinary team includes clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic specialists, physician-scientists, and scientists from the departments of Neuroscience, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neuro-Radiology, and Rehabilitation Medicine, along with the spectrum of basic science disciplines, including genomics, stem cell biology, systems and computational biology, AI, bioengineering, developmental biology, biochemistry, and structural biology. We approach neuroscience through a wide and diverse lens of expertise. We are at the forefront of research, offering patients life-changing solutions to protect, preserve and restore neurological function and enhance brain resilience.
Our collaborative, interdisciplinary research into the nervous system has led to groundbreaking discoveries, including that the peripheral nervous system gives rise to cancer and metastases, and that the brain is the seat of longevity and plays a key role in regulating the immune system and whole-body energy/glucose metabolism.

Montefiore Einstein Leads the Paradigm Shift for the Early Surgical Management of Hemorrhagic Stroke
Leaders in the Science of Neurosurgical Care
We are continuously seeking and deploying advancements that improve patients’ lives and outcomes. Final frontiers don’t exist for Montefiore Einstein’s Department of Neurological Surgery. Our curiosity won’t allow for them. We know that every time we find an answer to “Why not?” we will be presented with a new round of “What ifs?”. Daunting for some but inspiring for us, we don’t stop at a published paper or peer recognition. Our initiative carries over into the examination room to drive diagnoses and treatment plans that get patients functioning again.
Our research team includes lab-based researchers (also known as basic scientists), translational researchers whose goal is to bring scientific advances from the bench to the clinic, and clinical researchers who develop and carry out trials of new therapies to improve outcomes, all working together to develop new neurological surgery treatments and protocols. This unique collaboration allows our research team to create and validate lab models in conjunction with clinical data to bring research from the lab to our patients.
State-of-the-Art Technology
We specialize in the most advanced neurosurgical techniques to help treat neurological conditions with precision while minimizing the risk of injury to the brain, spinal cord or nerves. We employ the latest available technology. Our innovative approaches include advanced brain-imaging, brain-mapping techniques, and a variety of minimally invasive procedures, such as endovascular surgery, endoscopy, robotic surgery, real-time electrophysiological monitoring, deep brain stimulation, laser ablation, and intraoperative imaging.
Restoring Hope
Patients with neurological disorders have historically had to accept the deterioration or impairment of function and capability, and contend with far more constricted lives as a consequence. In contrast, our approach is centered on maintaining and restoring function and capability so that patients can lead full and active lives, unhindered by limitations.
