Thyroid Diseases and Conditions
The thyroid gland is a small organ with a big job. Located in the neck, below the voice box, the thyroid gland is one of the body's most important endocrine organs. Its function is to produce thyroid hormone, which helps to regulate the body's metabolism by, among other things, controlling how fast your heart beats, how quickly you digest food, how much you sweat, the speed at which you burn calories, and many other activities.
Montefiore's Comprehensive Thyroid Program offers treatment for a number of thyroid disorders, including:
In all instances, accurate and timely evaluation and treatment are essential to managing the problem and controlling symptoms.
Evaluating Thyroid Disorders
Once your doctor has referred you to a thyroid specialist or endocrinologist, thyroid problems can be fairly easy to diagnose. Among other things, you will be asked about symptoms you've noticed, such as changes in body temperature, weight and energy level. Be sure to tell your doctor about:
- Medications you're taking.
- Any previous thyroid surgery.
- Whether you have a family history of thyroid problems.
- If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
- If you've ever been treated with radiation to the head or neck.
After the medical history, your doctor will examine you. He or she will feel your neck to check your thyroid gland for changes in size or shape and look for changes in heart rate, reflexes, muscle strength or skin texture. The good news is most thyroid diseases can be treated.
