North Shore - Long Island Jewish Medical Center - First Year
This is a PGY-4 or a PGY-6 rotation intended to give residents a three-month plastic surgery experience at the North Shore and Long Island Jewish Medical Center campuses.
The goals of the rotation are for the residents:
- To participate in private practice plastic surgery that is more common at a large community teaching hospital, including cosmetic surgery, breast reconstruction and more routine pediatric plastic surgery cases.
- To have senior level operative experience in plastic surgery cases.
- Ability to be in charge of plastic surgery patients.
- To be exposed to a wide variety of opinions on operative cases in plastic surgery.
At the conclusion of the rotation, residents should demonstrate an investigative and analytic approach to clinical situations and to know how to apply the basic and clinically supportive sciences that are appropriate to the discipline.
The senior-level residents should showcompetence and expertise in:
- Congenital defects of the head and neck, including clefts of the lip and palate, and craniofacial surgery.
- Neoplasms of the head and neck, including the oropharynx, and the importance of endoscopy in the management of these cases.
- Craniomaxillofacial trauma, including fractures.
- Aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery of the head and neck, trunk, and extremities.
