About Congenital Disorders

Congenital disorders include a wide range of conditions that can arise during the development of the brain, spinal cord and surrounding tissues, both during gestation in the womb and after birth, during early childhood. These abnormalities can occur in the tissues or fluid spaces of the brain, the brain-skull interface and the spinal cord, as well as in the development of the bone, muscle and skin that covers the brain and spinal cord.

Our Unique Approach

Our team is expert in the management of all congenital abnormalities that begin after conception and can involve any part of the central nervous system. We utilize the most advanced MRI and CAT scan technology to localize and image the abnormalities your child may face. Often working with other pediatric specialists, we surgically correct the physical abnormality to reduce its impact on other organs of the body and on development. Children with these conditions are then referred to our FUNCTION program, where their nervous and musculoskeletal systems are monitored for signs of impaired development or function. Our team ensures that you are informed about your child’s condition and treatment at every step of the process and that you know exactly how we approach your child’s specific problem.

Our physicians are thought leaders in the evaluation and management of myelomeningocele, and have lectured internationally on the advancement of therapeutics for this and many other congenital disorders.
