Montefiore Medical Center conducts research to understand normal gastroenterologic and liver functions and to develop effective therapies for treating a wide range of disorders.
Our Marion Bessin Liver Research Center was established in 1974 and is funded by The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The center's experts carry out pioneering research in the following areas:
- Cell transplantation to regenerate diseased tissue
- Gene regulation, molecular genetics, somatic Gene transfer and gene therapy, Hepatitis B and C viruses, and mechanisms underlying hepatic carcinogenesis
- Membrane biogenesis, receptor biology, molecular motors and macromolecular transport
- Biochemistry, enzymology, hepatocellular toxicity, cytokines and hepatic fibrosis
