Our Approach to Orthopedic Endocrinology
Endocrinology and the treatment of metabolic bone diseases are essential to Montefiore Einstein Orthopedic Surgery. Bone is a living tissue that responds to many nutritional and environmental factors. Health of the bone is, therefore, vital to overall musculoskeletal care. Our knowledge and expertise within the field ensure the highest-quality care for even the most complicated cases. We’re ranked in the top 1% of all hospitals in the nation for Orthopedics and Endocrinology according to U.S. News & World Report.
We are dedicated to the diagnosis and management of metabolic bone conditions, from more common conditions like osteoporosis to lesser-known ailments such as hyperparathyroidism. Working together, our goal is to help patients realize optimal bone health and avoid fractures, delays in healing and other preventable skeletal events.
The experience of our patients and their loved ones—not simply their ailments—demands our full attention. Your dedicated care team will be there to discuss your condition, answer questions, assess treatment options, and develop a treatment strategy that is best for you.
At Montefiore Einstein, we believe that optimal outcomes are achieved through thorough evaluations, accurate diagnoses and intelligent patient-specific treatment plans developed through years of clinical experience. Our specialists endeavor to prevent future fractures and, if a fracture has already occurred, to address its underlying cause in order to ensure timely and optimal healing.

Advanced Orthopedic Endocrinology Treatments
It is our belief that many joint problems can be treated with non-surgical interventions, such as physical therapy, activity modification, bracing, weight loss, medications or injections. In some cases, however, surgery is necessary. When surgery is needed, our specialists employ state-of-the-art, minimally invasive and blood-sparing techniques to improve pain and function and to minimize recovery time. For those seeking further information, we have included a few examples of common procedures that we perform at Montefiore Einstein. Our physicians can help you decide which treatment is right for your condition. Some of the most common treatments we offer include:
Fragility fractures caused by osteoporosis can have devastating consequences on patients and their families, causing pain and immobility, as well as potential complications like blood clots, infections and even untimely death.
Antiresorptive therapies are used to increase bone strength in individuals with osteoporosis. They include several types of treatment, such as bisphosphonates, estrogens, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and monoclonal antibodies like denosumab. Available in oral and injectable forms, these agents prevent fractures and treat osteoporosis.
After a detailed evaluation of your medical condition, prior treatment history, contributing factors, personal preferences and benefits and risks, our physicians help you choose the most appropriate treatment.
Fragility fractures caused by osteoporosis can have devastating consequences on patients and their families, causing pain and immobility, as well as potential complications like blood clots, infections and even untimely death.
Until recently, antiresorptive therapy was the only treatment option available for fragility fractures caused by osteoporosis. Newer anabolic agents are now available if you cannot tolerate or fail to respond to antiresorptive therapy or if you are at high risk of fracture. Teriparatide and abaloparatide are daily injections, self-administered by patients at home. Romosozumab is a monthly injection administered in a medical facility. Our experts will help you choose the treatment option that is right for you and monitor you throughout your treatment to make sure it is safe and effective.
Disorders of the parathyroid gland are relatively common. While most cases are mild and can be managed nonsurgically, in more severely affected patients, the resulting elevated calcium levels or osteoporosis might require a surgical approach.
Our experts will carefully evaluate each patient on a case-by-case basis to determine who may benefit from surgery and who can be safely monitored. If surgical intervention is necessary, our physicians will help coordinate further care with expert head and neck surgeons who are dedicated to the management of parathyroid disorders.
