Maintain a Healthy Weight

If you are overweight—or obese—with a significant amount of belly fat, the risk of developing colorectal cancer is significantly higher, especially for males. Making a commitment to weight reduction and maintaining an optimal Body Mass Index (BMI) over time can help decrease the likelihood of colorectal cancer development.

Stay Physically Active

It’s no secret that a lack of exercise can be detrimental to your health, and that includes your colon, which relies on regular activity to function properly. Even moderate exercise such as walking, if practiced every day, can make a significant difference in your overall health and well-being—and can be a factor in reducing the likelihood of colorectal cancer.

Follow a Healthy Diet

A long-term diet of highly processed foods—containing ingredients that have been refined, or has artificial flavors, colors, or other synthetic components—as well as red meat, has been shown to contribute to the development of colorectal cancer. By introducing multiple servings of nutrient- and fiber-rich vegetables, fruits and whole grains, you can help lower your risk of colorectal cancer.

Limit Use of Alcohol

Colorectal cancer has been linked to moderate to heavy alcohol use—and even light to moderate alcohol intake carries some risk. It’s best to avoid alcohol altogether, but if alcohol consumption is part of your lifestyle, you should limit your intake to two drinks a day (men) and one drink a day (women).
