Creative Arts Therapy
Department of Psychiatry, Montefiore Medical Center
Licensed creative arts therapists with specialties in art, music and dance/movement therapies work with adult and pediatric patients in the Department of Psychiatry. Individual and group sessions are delivered on an inpatient and outpatient basis on the Moses and Wakefield campuses as part of psychiatric rehabilitation services.
Research shows that creative arts therapy can play an important role in psychiatric care. Therapeutic creative practices enable people to engage in psychological treatment even when they find it difficult to express themselves verbally. Studies find that creative arts therapy can help address psychiatric patients' need for psychological stability, improve their mental state, build self-esteem, improve their coping skills and promote socialization with others. With the aid of creative arts therapy, patient-staff communication can improve and patients' overall quality of life can be enhanced.
