Pediatric Surgery
This service treats patients sent by primary care physicians for evaluation, testing, consultation and treatment of surgical conditions of childhood.
Office hours are conducted in the Children's Hospital at Montefiore, by appointment. Referrals range from the commonplace – hernia, hydrocele, breast masses, circumcision, undescended testis, subcutaneous lumps and bumps, cysts and sinuses – to the most complex illnesses and tumors. This service also cares for children with urgent conditions such as incarcerated hernia, appendicitis, intussusception, pyloric stenosis, soft tissue infections, and other illnesses requiring immediate surgery.
Special clinical interests of the faculty include surgery of the newborn, minimally invasive ("laparoscopic") surgery, surgical oncology, intestinal motility disorders and Hirschsprung's disease, adolescent breast disease, treatment of congenital vascular lesions, and bariatric (weight loss) surgery.
Patients are admitted to the Children's Hospital at Montefiore and care is rendered in cooperation with pediatric medical specialists. A written report is sent to the referring physician.
