The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers a full range of evidence-based pharmacological, psychological and neurostimulation treatments within our outpatient, intensive outpatient and inpatient sites throughout the Bronx and Westchester County.

Regardless of the setting, all our treatments are delivered in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, coordinated and collaborative manner. We individualize treatment to help achieve the best possible outcome for our patients, families and the community.

Members of our multidisciplinary treatment teams include psychiatrists, psychologists and neuropsychologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, primary care physicians, social workers, substance use counselors and creative arts therapists—who partner with medical and nursing schools, graduate education programs and research centers to improve healthcare through learning and research and ensure each patient experiences the best possible care.

Our treatment teams provide an array of psychiatric services that include the following:

Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations
Our treatment planning begins with an expert assessment that includes an interview with a mental health professional, supplemented as needed by selected questionnaires and, in some cases, additional testing. We want to achieve a clear understanding of your initial problems, overall preferences and ultimate goals so that we may develop the most patient-centered and effective plan possible.

Individual Psychotherapy
Also called talk therapy, individual psychotherapy involves meeting with a psychologist, social worker or psychiatrist. These sessions can use one or more of a range of evidence-based treatment approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT) or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). The choice of therapeutic approach is often based on what is known about the success of different methods for treating each condition and on your preferences.

Group Therapy
Some forms of talk therapy are particularly effective when delivered in a group setting led by an experienced psychologist, social worker, or psychiatrist. Participants in the group can benefit from the skills and insights of the therapist leading the group, as well as the opportunity to support and learn from each other.

Family & Couples Therapy
Our psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists are available to meet with families or couples during challenging times. Family and couples therapy can be an effective way of addressing relationship problems from multiple perspectives. In some cases, only a few sessions are needed to help evaluate and strategize around an impasse in a relationship or a complex family dynamic. Others can benefit from ongoing treatment for weeks or months to successfully develop the tools to tackle persistent challenges.

Medication Treatments
Our psychiatrists have substantial expertise with medications developed to safely treat a wide range of conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some individuals can be treated with medications alone. Others benefit from a combination of medications and psychotherapy, while others may only require psychotherapy. Special consultation is also available for those interested in the risks and benefits of medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Our faculty practitioners continuously integrate current best treatment practices for different conditions with a patient’s preferences and health goals.

Neuropsychological Testing & Evaluation
We offer detailed testing for children, adolescents and adults who exhibit learning, attentional or cognitive problems including suspected learning disabilities, attention-deficit disorder, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Our comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations usually include a four- to six-hour session or several shorter sessions. We will then review the assessment report with you and discuss our recommendations.

Neurostimulation
We also offer inpatient electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and outpatient transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
