Women’s Mental Health

We diagnose and treat women’s psychiatric issues using medication management and psychotherapy. Our team has expertise in caring for:

• Mood changes related to menstrual cycle or menopause
• Mood changes related to pregnancy loss or infertility
• New parents
• Pregnancy

We work collaboratively with the Montefiore Einstein Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women's Health as well as other treatment providers to develop holistic, comprehensive, individualized treatment plans for all our patients.

Perinatal Mental Health at the Institute for Women’s Health 
Located within the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic at the Institute for Women’s Health / Eastchester Professional Center, our team provides short-term psychotherapy and medication management for obstetric and fertility care patients at Montefiore Einstein.

We treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, as well as other mental health conditions like bipolar disorder and trauma-related disorders during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum. We also support patients coping with pregnancy loss, infertility and other medical issues. Our care is comprehensive, collaborative and closely coordinated with the in-house Women’s Health Team.

• Reproductive psychiatry medication management consultation

Reproductive Psychiatry (via ACUTE)
The Reproductive Psychiatry Team with the Ambulatory Consults, Urgent Treatment and Evaluations (ACUTE) Clinic provides time-limited medication and therapy to help treat peripartum mental health concerns. Patients are treated for a variety of mental health conditions, including adapting to a first child, loss of pregnancy, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), managing bipolar and trauma-related disorders and sexual wellness concerns.

We offer collaborative care and support across the reproductive cycle. The Reproductive Psychiatry ACUTE Team coordinates treatment with providers within the Montefiore Einstein network.

Our specialized offerings include:

• Behavioral health virtual urgent care (for patients 18 years and older)
• Medication consultation, initiation and follow-up
• Short-term psychotherapy

Montefiore Einstein Psychiatry Associates
One in five new and expecting mothers experience perinatal anxiety and depression, and evidence shows that mental health treatment significantly improves outcomes. The Perinatal Psychiatry Program seeks to bridge this gap by providing expert consultation and long-term outpatient treatment.

Women who are struggling with mood, anxiety, traumatic stress and other emotional difficulties related to pregnancy and motherhood may seek therapy from experts in perinatal mental health and women’s health. The focus of treatment varies but often emphasizes how emotions, relationships and sexual health are affected by pregnancy, the birth experience and motherhood. Many individuals also seek the help of a reproductive psychiatrist who is specially trained in mental health conditions associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Inpatient Perinatal Psychiatry Consult Service
The Inpatient Perinatal Psychiatry Consult Service provides proactive and reactive consultations for pregnant and postpartum individuals admitted to the Jack D. Weiler Hospital. We provide diagnostic clarification and medication management and support discharge planning for perinatal patients with acute psychiatric complaints.
