Cancer Rehabilitation
We offer a comprehensive range of advanced treatments to address the physical, neurological and functional challenges that cancer patients may experience throughout their journey. Whether patients are recovering from surgery, coping with the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation or managing long-term survivorship issues, our specialized rehabilitation team develops individualized treatment plans to optimize recovery and improve quality of life.
Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Our team provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to individuals recovering from heart or lung conditions, emergencies, or surgeries. Using state-of-the-art monitoring and exercise equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbers, rowers and other specialized machines, we help individuals improve their cardiovascular or pulmonary health through exercise, nutrition and other lifestyle changes.
Cardiac Rehabilitation Therapy
Our regimen offers a medically supervised, multifaceted approach for patients recovering from cardiac events or managing chronic heart conditions. It integrates monitored exercise, comprehensive education on risk factor modification and psychosocial support to improve cardiovascular health.
Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation
Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
Our team of musculoskeletal experts is trained in all aspects of the musculoskeletal system and provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care using state-of-the-art diagnostics, treatments and interventions that focus on helping individuals recover from injuries, surgeries or conditions affecting the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Neurologic Disorders Rehabilitation
Our multidisciplinary team of world-renowned specialists brings together research and clinical care to advance the rehabilitation of the full range of pediatric and adult nervous system disorders. We use state-of-the-art neurorehabilitation techniques and advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), human-computer interfaces, robotics and the latest electrodiagnostic technology, to optimize and accelerate the recovery of sustainable function.
Occupational Therapy
Our regimens empower individuals to master essential activities of daily living, adapt to new challenges and reengage meaningfully in life’s occupations. Whether at home, at work or in the community, we help individuals improve function and participation, sometimes through adapted activities and environments.
Pediatric Rehabilitation
Our board certified pediatric physiatrists are dedicated to caring for children and adolescents with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders, spinal cord injuries, developmental disorders and other conditions. We closely collaborate with other specialized pediatric physicians and the broader Montefiore Einstein Health System, including the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM), to develop individualized medical and therapy programs designed to help children of all ages regain or improve their physical function, mobility and independence.
Physical Therapy
Our program focuses on restoring movement, alleviating pain and rebuilding strength and functional mobility, particularly for those recovering from injury or surgery or managing chronic conditions, employing evidence-based techniques to enhance physical capacity.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Therapy
We provide comprehensive interventions for individuals with chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma or interstitial lung disease. Through exercise training, education and behavioral strategies, we aim to improve breathing, increase exercise tolerance, reduce symptoms of dyspnea and enhance self-management and quality of life.
Specialty Programs
Our specialized programs encompass a spectrum of multidisciplinary clinics and centers, including the Function Clinic and the Comprehensive Spine Center, which combine surgical, medical and rehabilitative expertise with the latest and most advanced nonsurgical and surgical techniques to maximize function, participation, independence and quality of life for our patients.
Speech-Language Pathology
Our services are committed to optimizing communication abilities, encompassing articulation, fluency, voice and language, and expertly addressing swallowing dysfunctions (dysphagia) to support safe nutrition and social interaction.
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Our Program is designed to assist patients with conditions affecting the inner ear, which often result in symptoms such as dizziness, spinning, visual disturbances and challenges with posture, balance and walking. We ensure every patient’s successful recovery and aim to enhance their ability to engage in everyday activities without the anxiety, discomfort and physical risks that inner ear complications can cause.
Women’s Health Rehabilitation
Many conditions and illnesses, such as osteoporosis, pelvic floor dysfunction and female-specific cancers, present differently in women. Our renowned team of physical therapists with specialized training in pelvic floor anatomy and conditions, as well as nurses, nutritionists and social workers, addresses female-specific rehabilitation needs. We focus on the unique physiology of women through the application of newly emerging scientific discoveries in the field of women’s health rehabilitation, altering the course of the condition, restoring function and optimizing quality of life.

Leaders in the Science of Redefining Recovery
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is committed to evolving treatment paradigms for individuals with disabilities, pain and impaired function.
Our internationally recognized physician-scientists and biomedical investigators collaborate with both industry and federal support, spearheading numerous clinical trial initiatives and basic and translational research projects. We seek to unlock innovative approaches to advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, three-dimensional (3D) printing and implantable devices; advance nonopioid pain management strategies, including biomechanical interventions and regenerative medicine approaches, and examine models of care delivery and transitions across the rehabilitation continuum, with an emphasis on quality improvement. Our curiosity covers the entire lifespan as we investigate interventions to optimize functional outcomes in children with congenital or acquired disabilities, as well as treatments to maintain or restore functional independence in older adults with multiple chronic conditions or frailty.
The Department’s collaboration extends beyond Montefiore Einstein to redefine recovery by advancing evidence-based rehabilitation care, fostering innovation and addressing the needs of both local and global patient populations.
State-of-the-Art Technology
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation leverages the latest technological advances, including artificial intelligence, human-computer interfaces, robotics, neuromodulation and virtual reality to develop faster and more accurate diagnoses, alter the course of conditions and restore independence.
