About the Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship
The Montefiore Einstein Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) Fellowship is a two-year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Each year, one position is available for a board certified or board-eligible candidate trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Upon completion of the Program, fellows may become eligible for the PRM subspecialty boards. This program is one of 22 accredited pediatric rehabilitation training programs in the country.
The PRM Fellowship focuses on delivering care for children and adolescents with congenital and acquired disabilities, including brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, neuromuscular disorders, hematological and oncological conditions, brachial plexopathy, limb deficiencies, concussions, sports injuries and burn injuries.
The fellow will gain clinical exposure to outpatient pediatric rehabilitation clinics at Montefiore Einstein and the Rose F. Kennedy Center. Inpatient pediatric rehabilitation rotations will take place at Blythedale Children’s Hospital, while inpatient consults will be conducted at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM). Additionally, the fellow will participate in rotations in pediatric neurology, rheumatology, orthopedics, neonatology, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, genetics, cerebral palsy clinic, multidisciplinary function restoration clinic and pediatric clinics for medically complex children. The fellow will have hands-on opportunities to further develop their spasticity management techniques, including ultrasound-guided Botox injections, alcohol blocks, intrathecal baclofen pumps and pediatric electromyography (EMG) skills.
The fellow will have adequate designated research time (six weeks) distributed throughout the outpatient months and will participate in a structured pediatric research course over the two years. Fellows work closely with the core Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Program residents and with residents and fellows from related subspecialties, providing opportunities for teaching and lecturing. Attendance at national and international conferences is encouraged. Education funds for books, conferences and other educational needs are available each year of the Fellowship. Additionally, each fellow has one month of elective time per year, with opportunities to participate in the Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp, Special Olympics Programs, global health initiatives and medical missions. Per Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) guidelines, one month of vacation per fellowship year is also granted.
Our PRM Program values comprehensive clinical care and emphasizes multidisciplinary teamwork, compassion and integrity. It aims to provide exemplary patient- and family-centered care in the greater Bronx, New York City and Westchester County communities. Additionally, our PRM fellows should demonstrate empathy and a commitment to ensuring excellent continuity of care for children and adolescents with special health care needs. Lastly, our PRM Program strives to provide fellows with an environment that fosters personal and clinical development, academic growth, scholarly activities and personal fulfillment training.
