Education & Training Programs

The Montefiore Einstein Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) offers highly competitive residency and fellowship programs covering the full range of physiatric subspecialties.

Our logistical landscape spans the Bronx and parts of Westchester County, allowing our residents and fellows to experience a unique combination of inpatient and outpatient care and gain exposure to a wide range of pathology. More importantly, it sets a solid foundation for an outstanding educational and training experience.

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is one of the largest and most esteemed in the tristate area, consistently breaking ground with innovative, new treatments, procedures and approaches to patient care, with a focus on producing stellar outcomes and raising the bar for other programs in the region—and around the world.

Residency Program

The Residency Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Montefiore Einstein was established in 1946 and has a long history of leadership in the field. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was a founding department of Albert Einstein School of Medicine and had a significant early impact on the development of PM&R as a specialty.

The educational goal of the Residency Program is to prepare residents for unsupervised practice of PM&R through the acquisition of all general and PM&R-specific core competencies in a thoughtful, developmental sequence as guided by the physiatric milestones. The Program is dedicated to providing an education that is practical and relevant to community needs and resident interests, leading to competent practice in all PM&R domains.

Fellowships

The physical medicine and rehabilitation fellowship programs at Montefiore Einstein provide the comprehensive training necessary for physicians to deliver complete care across a variety of clinical settings. Our team of enthusiastic educators applies current evidence-based guidelines to daily patient care and leads efforts to create scientific evidence for the future. Through robust instruction and a well-rounded curriculum, Montefiore Einstein equips trainees with the knowledge and skills required to engage in patient-centered practice. Each program we offer is committed to creating an environment for fellows that fosters personal development, fulfillment and academic growth.

Pain Medicine Fellowship

We seek to instill in our fellows the ability to improve function and decrease pain for our patients through responsible pharmacological mindedness, sound clinical judgment, exceptional science and the integration of the newest and most advanced interventional techniques.

Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship

Our fellows will gain clinical exposure to outpatient pediatric rehabilitation clinics at Montefiore Einstein and the Rose F. Kennedy Center, delivering care for children and adolescents with congenital and acquired disabilities, including brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, neuromuscular disorders, hematological and oncological conditions, brachial plexopathy, limb deficiencies, concussions, sports injuries and burn injuries. Fellows will also have designated research time distributed throughout the outpatient months and will participate in a structured pediatric research course over the two years.

Sports Medicine Fellowship

The Sports Medicine Fellowship Program trains our fellows to provide both athletes and non-athletes with comprehensive care across the rehabilitation spectrum. This includes prehabilitation, such as making recommendations for training programs to prevent injuries in athletes, managing acute injuries in collaboration with the Emergency Department team and orthopedic surgeons, and offering rehabilitation care in partnership with the core physical medicine and rehabilitation team, which encompasses cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, balance rehabilitation and therapists across all disciplines.

Women’s Health Rehabilitation Fellowship

This one-year Program is the first in the U.S. to provide a unique approach to female-specific rehabilitation care that focuses explicitly on the gender differences of musculoskeletal conditions, female pelvic floor dysfunctions, musculoskeletal disorders related to pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period, osteoporosis and the management of impairments caused by female-specific cancers.

Medical Student Education

The Medical Student Education Program at Montefiore Einstein aims to introduce students to the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation across the entire spectrum of care. Students have the opportunity to rotate through acute rehabilitation, subacute and long-term care settings, as well as outpatient venues that cover the full range of physiatric specialty and subspecialty services. They observe and participate in the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team process and become familiar with the treatment modalities used by physical, occupational and speech-language pathologists.

Montefiore Einstein participates in active clinical education programs for physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT) and speech-language pathology (SLP). We have established affiliations with local therapy programs, as well as numerous programs from outside the region. We are committed to delivering high-quality learning experiences and guidance to help students cultivate the essential skills needed to become vital and responsible members of the profession.
