What Are Foot & Ankle Injuries?
Foot and ankle injuries are quite common and represent some of the most disruptive musculoskeletal complaints. These injuries result from damage or trauma to the tendons, ligaments, muscles and/or bones in the foot and ankle area. They can range from mild conditions, such as a sprain, to more severe injuries like bone or tendon ruptures that may require surgery or a cast.
Foot and ankle injuries are particularly prevalent among athletes participating in sports that involve jumping and rapid directional changes, such as soccer, football, dancing, gymnastics and basketball. However, even non-athletes can risk a minor injury from simply stepping incorrectly. Older adults, in particular, face an increased risk of injuries and fractures due to the natural decline in muscle mass and bone strength associated with aging. This decline can lead to vision and balance issues, which further elevate their risk of injury.
Signs and symptoms of a foot or ankle injury may include pain or tenderness, swelling, bruising or discoloration, limited range of motion, inability to bear weight on the affected area and instability or weakness. Most foot and ankle conditions can be treated with nonsurgical interventions, including bracing, casting, injections, orthotics or physical therapy. In some cases, surgery may be the most effective solution. Our team offers a variety of techniques designed to reduce pain, enhance function, minimize surgical discomfort and shorten recovery time.
