Our ACGME-accredited Hand Surgery Fellowship offers exceptional training in all aspects of hand and upper extremity surgery. The fellowship provides extensive hands-on experience across a wide range of complex conditions with 9 fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeons.
As an advanced academic health system and regional referral center, Montefiore Einstein provides fellows with comprehensive exposure to pediatric and adult conditions of the hand and upper extremity. Clinical experience includes the management of acute and chronic trauma, degenerative disorders, tendon and ligament injuries, bone and soft tissue reconstruction, peripheral nerve disorders, and other complex pathology. Advanced nerve surgery is a strong focus of the fellowship, including brachial plexus surgery, nerve transfers, and microvascular reconstruction of the upper extremity. Fellows gain extensive experience in both pediatric and adult brachial plexus pathology, including surgical reconstruction and multidisciplinary care.
In addition to hand pathology, the fellowship encompasses the entire upper extremity, including advanced elbow and shoulder surgery. Fellows participate in the evaluation and management of complex elbow and shoulder conditions, ensuring comprehensive upper extremity surgical training. There are over 2,500 surgical cases between 9 hand fellowship-trained surgeons performed annually and nearly 26,000 patient annual visits.
Curriculum
The Hand Fellowship curriculum includes weekly Orthopedic Department Grand Rounds, Hand Division Surgical Indication Conference, and lectures on core hand surgery topics. There are also monthly Journal Club meetings and Hand Club meetings to discuss complex surgical cases. The fellow will also participate in quarterly cadaver dissections and the annual anatomy dissection course for orthopedic residents.
Research and Testing
The fellow is required to complete at least one research project, culminating in a publishable manuscript. The fellow will meet with our Research Director prior to the start of fellowship to design a research project to be completed during their fellowship year.
