Institute for Emergency Care Training
The Institute for Emergency Care Training at Montefiore Medical Center provides emergency care training to the community and EMS agencies. For over 30 years, it has provided original and refresher Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training to thousands of EMS providers. We are a New York State Department of Health approved Course Sponsor for certified EMS courses.
EMT Original & Refresher Courses are offered twice a year in January and July. The courses are described below.
EMT Original Course
This course provides an individual with the knowledge and skills required by NYS EMS to become certified as an EMT. It is 42 sessions long and meets twice a week on Monday and Wednesday evenings. It takes approximately five and a half months to complete the course. The certification as an EMT is valid for three years.
EMT Refresher Course
This course provides an individual with an EMT certificate the knowledge and skills required by NYS EMS to re-certify as an EMT. It is 31 sessions long and meets on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Since it is designed as a competency-based challenge course, the class sessions each individual is required to attend is custom-designed around his/her needs. It takes approximately four months to complete the course.
