Our Services

Wakefield nurses are nationally certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) across diverse specialties, serving patients from neonatal through geriatric care. Our specialized Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit reflects our commitment to Age-Friendly Health Systems, reducing hospital-related complications for older adults through evidence-based, targeted care.
Wakefield’s services are designed to meet the diverse and evolving needs of our community. Our nurses play a central role in delivering evidence-based, multidisciplinary care with an emphasis on safety, quality, and whole-person healing.

  • Behavioral Health

Wakefield provides compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric and behavioral health services. Our nurses partner with interdisciplinary teams to support patients facing acute mental health needs, substance use challenges, and complex behavioral conditions. Care emphasizes safety, dignity, and long-term recovery—connecting patients to community resources and systemwide supports that promote wellness beyond hospitalization.

  • Critical Care Medicine

The Wakefield intensive care unit earned the prestigious Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), a recognition of superior outcomes, continuous improvement, and a healthy work environment. Our critical care nurses deliver high-acuity, evidence-based care with precision, compassion, and resilience—ensuring our most vulnerable patients receive the highest standard of care.

  • Emergency Department

In our high-volume, fast-paced Emergency Department, nurses are frontline leaders in clinical innovation, advocacy and rapid decision-making. Treating thousands of patients each year, ED nurses provide expert care while educating patients and families. In 2024, our ED earned Bronze Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) for implementing targeted strategies to meet the complex needs of older adults.

  • Geriatrics & Age-Friendly Care

Wakefield is nationally recognized for advancing Age-Friendly Health Systems through its specialized Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit. Nurses use the “4Ms” framework—What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility—to reduce complications, prevent decline, and improve recovery for older adults. This focus ensures safe, dignified, and personalized care for every older patient.

  • Rehabilitation & Mobility Services

Our nursing-led mobility initiatives improve patient outcomes by reducing complications and enhancing recovery. Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center is the first of its kind in the Bronx, providing top-tier heart and lung outpatient rehabilitation services and tripling the capacity for cardiopulmonary care. Through structured rehabilitation programs and quality-improvement efforts, Wakefield nurses help patients regain independence, shorten hospital stays, and prevent readmissions.

  • Surgical Services

Wakefield is the first and only hospital in the Bronx to receive the Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement, reflecting our excellence in surgical care. Nurses are critical members of the multidisciplinary teams that support patients through minimally invasive and complex surgical procedures—from the operating room through recovery and rehabilitation. Our surgical care model emphasizes safety, quality and long-term recovery, supported by comprehensive hospital-based rehabilitation services.

  • Women’s Health

Our full-spectrum women’s health services are designed to deliver seamless, integrated care—from gynecological and prenatal services to delivery, postpartum care and recovery. Wakefield’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offers specialized support for high-risk newborns, staffed by highly trained nurses and interdisciplinary experts. As a Baby-Friendly-designated hospital, we uphold the highest standards in evidence-based maternity and breastfeeding support. Through this global initiative of rigorous standards to support breastfeeding, mother-baby bonding and evidence-based maternity care sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), we support mothers and babies by adhering to the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. In addition, Wakefield’s strength in geriatrics allows us to provide advanced care for older women, including postmenopausal care, osteoporosis treatment and pelvic health services.
